Random prior selections lost when using shift and scroll

Post by j_c_hallgren »

Sorry if topic was a bit confusing...
I'm running latest vers 5.50.1 ..and needed to delete a large number of Zone Alarm log files...
So selected first one, then held down shift, and used down arrow to select the others... but at a seemingly random point, the first 'n' number of selected files get un-selected! :P :?
It first happened after about 30 files, but has happened after other number of files also...from as few as about five to around 20 or so...I don't see any pattern thus far...and when I retry select, it never seems to fail at same point!
It also happens when I select "last" file and scroll upwards to pick others.

Will revert/back up to another vers and see what happens...

Update: Same issue on 5.40.42! :P

Update 2: Used Win Expl to copy 50 or so of these files to another folder...in THAT folder, select works correctly...so...is ZA updating something that mucks up/affects selection?

Update 3: Turning off "auto refresh on file chgs" allowed it to work in ZA folder...even though I don't see any change in data for other files, but maybe there is something that I'm missing...in any case, I've got a work-around for now...but still strange the way it's happening!

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

This is only a guess, but you mentionned log files so.. this might be due to having auto-refresh ON & being on a folder where at least one file is being updated (eg created, deleted, or size changed...)

I've seen something like this aswell, when the autorefresh happens "something" happens in XY aswell. It's not lost of selection, but it will behave like you released keys or something I guess.
I've seen this while trying to select a bunch of files using mouse, I left-click a blank-area, hold clicked and drag to select all the files I want. But if an autorefresh occurs it "stops". Selection is still there but I'm not dragging anymore, I have to either redo it or hold Ctrl and start where I was "interrupted".

I guess you were typing your reply while I was typing my "Update 3"...
Well, if it can't be handled by XY without disabling Auto-refresh (which I depend on), then I guess it's a task for the wiki! So at least the issue is documented...I didn't look fully but didn't spot it there now...

A quick-access button/menu/KS to toggle auto-refresh or to suspend it for this view (until next browsing) would be an idea...

Well I beleive there's a "Refresh" TB button already, you could add a checkable menuitem to toggle auto-refresh here (ctxt) if you want?

Seems like a good idea to me! Makes it a bit more accessable easily yet doesn't clutter up anything....

How about the more elegant behaviour of disabling auto-refresh when you have the shift and/or ctrl key held down? Or perhaps even when you have items selected in the list view?

Given that the issue appeared to me when trying to select multiple items, if there was a way to have auto-refresh automatically disabled only during the time when it would 'muck up' desired selection, that would be ideal, IMO. If you only have one item selected, I don't think a-r causes that to be lost, but trying to lasso in a bunch of files, it did.

Hmmm, it's an idea. Let's meditate about it over Xmas.
