File search folder depth option
File search folder depth option
Sometimes I just forget where my file is inside a large file system. But I know that it is within a certain depth range say no more than 3 folder-level depths.
If just search the whole drive which contain millions of files, it will take an hour or so. If there is an option that can limit the search file folder depth, it will be very helpful.
This is just like the -maxdepth option for the find utility for *Nix OS.

An alternative option: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/search_my_files.html
Command line option: /SubFolderDepth <Value> Specifies the subfolders depth. 0 = Unlimited.

it's a pity that xyplorer cannot support this feature though.

Will e.g. folderreport() support this as well?

And what about us using the standard IP GUI? Would that be something to have on the lonely Options tab?admin wrote:Maybe, I got to check that...

Re: File search folder depth option
It works in the standard IP GUI (simply enter the switch into the name field). And IMO it's perfect as it is. If I give it an extra checkbox (let alone on the Options tab) I will be flooded by emails from users who forgot that they limited the depth.

Re: File search folder depth option
Sorry - i don't agree that is a viable option...but understand concern about support...so...given that this is tied to "Include Subfolders", could that existing checkbox be converted to depth level but keeping same label? Using fixed choices that would have "All" instead of the possibly confusing "-1" maybe...and other choices being "None", "1 Level" to "10 Levels" or such...admin wrote:It works in the standard IP GUI (simply enter the switch into the name field). Might have to be moved to right end under Location as I see that choice boxes are a bit taller than checkboxes...
This would make it obvious to see setting, easy to use for all, and not a obscure option requiring extra keystokes.

Re: File search folder depth option
It's a power user setting, so you need some power to use it. It's just a nice option for very special cases. Not worth to clutter the UI with it.

Re: File search folder depth option
Repectfully disagree here! I see it as much more of an everyday user option than, for example, the existing "Mode" dropdown that I can't ever recall having anything but "Standard"..the other two choices are definitely special/power options for my way of using XY...also never used "Fuzzy" so is that a power option? To me, yes...but I've had a nbr of times when limiting depth would have made it easier to find desired items only and not extraneous ones.admin wrote:It's a power user setting, so you need some power to use it. And having a small dropdown vs existing checkbox wouldn't clutter up GUI, at least not to me...if we had to have both options, yes...but it's just an extension/enhancement of a binary switch to multi-values...ok, so you'd have to convert internal numeric value to a choice but that's not uncommon.

Re: File search folder depth option
i'd wish something like this appear, to simply type-in the depth. by default nothing there, and a tooltip while hovering, for explanation. easy to find and easy to use.

Re: File search folder depth option
I'd agree except for the fact that unlimited in this case is -1, not 0 as is more common...if 0 was all, 1 was current, 2 was current + next, etc, than it'd be a bit easier to have this style, I believe...so that's why I said combining it into one item would be most efficent and easy to use...eil wrote:i'd wish something like this appear, to simply type-in the depth. by default nothing there, and a tooltip while hovering, for explanation. easy to find and easy to use.![]()

Re: File search folder depth option
Here an old wish of mine:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... vel#p73839
Is it now possible to show files residing in folders for which folder name search criteria, including depth, are fulfilled?
