How are you using Extra Tags?

Post by admin »

You know, I'm just prepraring the website for the 13.80 release and I would need some real world examples to show off the feature. So, here is one to everybody: How are you (will you be) using Extra Tags?

Working with Ableton Live, I have digital instrument files and instrument racks that I'm going to tag up in XYplorer. The tags will be search points for the type of sounds banked within those files.

... Any chance that we could see a tag "cloud" pop-up window added to XYplorer, to help navigate vast amounts of tagged files?

Absolutely. I plan to add a "tag tree" by which you can browse all tagged items.

I have added 2 Extra tag columns almost immediately when the "Customize Extra Column..." interface appeared:
  • 1. Rating column for mp3 files in Music folder and subfolders (saved folder view)
    2. Popup column called "Done" in the Documents folder. Values:

    Code: Select all

    0%,-,25%,50%,75%,95%,-,100%
95% is especially important for me, because I always have files which I have only a little work to do on.

I like the "Completed/Done" column example... :)

And now, I fear I'm gonna win my "badge of :blackstorm: " today... :?

Regarding the rating, it's definitely something to push forward, but a word of caution if I may:
— It's certainly a good idea to advertise it for its strength, along the lines of a "Rate anything you want in XYplorer, files of any type and folders alike".
— But it may be safer to avoid mentioning music or images out of context (at least for XY v13.80). Because "tagging with a rating" in XYplorer is a different feature than the "actual saved rating" most users are used to / might be expecting (which is stored inside the files themselves by Windows Explorer, itunes... pretty much any music/images manager).

Note that I'm not criticizing XYplorer's tag-rating in the least! On the contrary, just trying to present it as what it is good for, and prevent future misunderstanding. :)
The reason I didn't bring up "actual rating" before (except in a PM a while back) is because I thought/hoped it was related to the upcoming Custom Columns. ;)

Hm, I might even add a "percentage" column type which displays a color bar for the values. Phase 2 ...

I know people who don't like to attach personal infomation (as for example: rating) inside the file. Not even in mp3 and jpg. So a separate solution is not superfluous.

From my perspective, I don't use any mp3 catalogue software, so mp3 rating in XY is at hand and just simply comfortable. And tags.dat is faster than read out the info from the files themselves.

I plan to use it this way.

1. I already have a script in place that moves images to the correct locations. It would be updated to have the checkmark column ticked for the newly moved file. This tick would mention that it can be used as a wallpaper
2. Another extra column to be in place would be Ratings - Where I would rate these wallpapers. I intend to do this from three places. a. List b. Full Screen Preview (currently not very convenient, but can be done by using UDCs. It would have been very convenient if the Full Screen Preview would have allowed some way to do this by using mouse only) and c. From the desktop itself (Plan to use Marco's XY communicator to do this)
3. Place a script in place that would randomly select and apply this wallpaper according to rules
4. I may use two additional columns to save the date when the wallpaper was last applied and a numeric column to show how many times the wallpaper was applied

This efforts would be reutilised in using it XY as a slideshow viewer as well. None of this is in place still.

Yep, "tag-rating" in XY is really comfortable! :) It has its merits and is certainly not superfluous (though the "privacy" argument is a bit far-fetched ;) ).
But as I said, I wasn't criticizing, I was mentioning "actual rating" to remind that it's clearly a different —but non exclusive— feature: tagging several hundreds (thousands?) of mp3s must have software-independent results. There are multiple reasons but that's the subject of a different topic, so one should suffice: to listen to their music, most people use media players, in which they wouldn't see or be able to use any rating. Conversely, the files they rate in their player(s) would appear unrated in XY...

Well, I won't go further, it's more the topic of future discussions...
So I'll get back on track and enjoy XY Extra Tags (and ratings)! :)

Haven't implemented it yet, but I'm thinking about using MS Word for my school psychology case notes. (Used Freeplane for a while and am using OneNote right now.) My idea is that each case will get a separate .docx file, then in XYplorer I can organize them per David Allen-style Next Actions. (Custom column with popup list of NAs.) I can also have columns for due dates, gender, and what school they go to.... Haven't figured out how I'll get this info propagated to my Kindle Fire though...

I have a new usage at home. My new column is called "Save" and the type of that is location. I have game folders and I administrate the location of the save files in the new column. In this way I can reach the game saves pretty easily. For example, in the Save column of the "The Walking Dead" folder is "C:\Users\Me\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead".

That's a really good idea.
