default file manager (option) screws up windows file explorer (windows 11)

I searched for this topic, but it must have been reported, so I appoligize in advance for a likely duplicate post.
Using trial versions (32 bit) on laptop Windows 10 22H2, and windows 11 Desktop. Scaling for each is 100%.
How can I get around the issues in windows 11, where XYP default viewer doesn't work. I need to go back to file explorer regularily, double click a folder, and I get the message about no default app being installed. My desired outcome is having the File Manager folder open in XYP. (this behavoior occurs in my win 10 laptop). I've seen this with other file managers too. I want to go into windows 11, choose to open destination folder (shortcut) and have that destination open in XYP, not another instance of Windows file explorer. With windows 11, currently there seems to little usefellness to the default file viewer option. Reverting to windows 10 22h2, obsolete, is hardly a solution.
The windows 10 laptop works fine, 27.2 I believe. but I'm not about to buy a license when I plan to upgrade the laptop. Are there any plans to fix this, or have I done something wrong?
