On switch to single-pane, remove (don't expand) [option]

I almost always have two panes open. And every time I switch to single-pane it's just to make XY smaller so I can access other things on my screen.
Currently, F10 removes the inactive list pane but makes the active list pane fill the whole existing list area. To reduce XY's footprint (my actual goal) I must manually size that down to what I need. When I return to two panes, I have to manually resize that back larger again.
--> So, I'd like an option to have F10 (or some variant on that) "remove" the inactive list pane. That would reduce the XY footprint to Tree + active pane, without either of those changing size.
When F10 is pressed again, XY would restore the inactive pane; using for it the same size as the currently active pane.
