I still believe that the free vers needs some minor publicity, as it may lead to a paying user, but it would need some sort of a "you understand NO support?" to access it...and maybe a custom splash screen on install reminding of such?

No, this does not help. (Some)People are always more stupid than the cleverest scheme you could invent.

Don't wory about publicity. Freeware advertises itself.

XYplorerFree is discontinued

Maybe j_c would be so kind to adapt the Wikipedia entry.

Oh yes, right. I should have notified you about it. The free version did not work good enough on recent operating systems (read: Vista); it had too many bugs for my taste which are all fixed in the current pay version; it still had the old school Win95 style interface. All in all it was likely to throw a distorted if not bad light on XYplorer so I decided to stop offering it. (I'm aware that you cannot remove anything from the internet.)

 Say what? You've dropped that? And you didn't say anything? While I can somewhat understand the basis for your decison, given that the mention in PC Mag in Feb 08 in the "157 Best Freeware" was a critical point in getting XY back on wikipedia, I think that decision should be reconsidered! Had this been closer to a year or greater from publication, I'd feel different, but this is a bit too short of a timeframe, IMHO. And hopefully in that time, we might be able to get a replacement "notable" print mention...that new UK mag mention might work, but I've not yet seen it in print which I'd like to do first if possible.

Having sufficient disclaimers about the Vista issue and such would "CYA" and I don't think that it was all that bad of a vers. so...maybe what you could do to solve the publicity/wikipedia problem is to make a freeware vers that is just a bit newer...not much newer, but a bit...that would guarantee that we could retain the "notable" link yet still not give people that much for nothing.
