Aaa that sux... oh well, thanks for trying! I'm going to hold on to the Beta until the trial's up, maybe you'll think of something in future.
I've only tried with XYPlorer and Xplorer2, since I'm going to be purchasing one of those two.
I've attached a screenshot of xplorer2, that's displaying it as it should.
ps. if anybody else is applying icons with IconPackager (it does come with some icons to test with), I'd love to hear if it's working, or if it's only me!

Do you have any idea of IconPackager's technology? I don't want to install it but just do a simple manual test. So, where's the alternate icon stored (file on disk?) and where is the reference to it stored (registry?). Any idea?

Good news! I've managed to get it to work!
In iconpackager you can explicitly specify to "repair shell icons for the following processes only"... I added xyplorer.exe and now everything is displaying as it should! Which is weird, because that setting is supposed to force those processes to use the originial default windows icons. oh well, who cares as long as it works :-)
It still doesnt change the fact that XYPlorer isn't picking up the customized icons automatically, its still something you may want to look at in future as other customization applications may not have that setting... but the solution above is fine for me!
I may be completely wrong, but I think that iconpackager hacks the shell32.dll file and replaces the default windows folder icon there. It's a fairly easy and safe process to do by hand.
Thanks for your attempts to help, going to make my purchase asap!
Cheers all
L

You can check that with XYplorer's Info Panel. First ensure "Show Embedded Icons on properties Tab" is checked in config/advanced. Then browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll and open the Properties tab. You can browse the contained icons using a little scrollbar.
If you are not completely wrong (and I hope you are!

) then I'd be quite surprised.

yea seems i am wrong, those icons in shell32.dll are still the default ones... did some googling, can't really find anything that explains precisely how they do it. I know they have some kind of partnership with Microsoft, from what I've read in the past Vista uses their technology apparently (not sure if that's iconpackager, or another one of Stardock's similar applications)... but that's as far as my advice goes I'm afraid. Best of luck to you if you want to go ahead and follow up... but like I said, I'm 100% on my side so I'm happy :-)
