I've just spent about 30 min cleaning up the mess from various pgrms that I've installed recently...there were shortcuts EVERYWHERE except where I'd prefer them...
OK, so I was used to W98SE for years and this W2K with its "Admin/All Users/User" setup can be a real PITA! I'm the only one here so I'm all 3-in-one...So when a shortcut only ends up on Desktop under User, it doesn't show when I'm forced into Admin, and reverse also...
To get around this hassle, I found that by moving all my shortcuts for Pgms and Desktop to the All Users setup, it doesn't matter WHO I am...
Anyway, I know some installers allow you to choose where/how to put shortcuts...in current user or all users, and then which folder in Pgms and where to put code...
I honestly don't recall how XY does it, but I thought I'd just suggest that type of customized install is prefered by power users like myself.
It does seem that XY has a very nice and clean reinstall so I'm guessing the original was just as good...just wanted to make sure, however, ok?
Installation shortcuts: Don't recall how XY does it BUT...

I'll check into that... good idea.
EDIT: found this
"Please take into consideration that a "normal user" has no rights to write in the all users area. Only admins have full access rights to the all users area."
One could test admin status during installation, but -- as you know

FYI: The single greatest keyboard trick I've learned about how to deal with this multi-user "nonsense" on W2K (XP also?) is to SHIFT+Right-Click on the ".exe" files for installs...this gives the added option to do a "Run As"! It then gives a "temporary" log-on for another user.
Thus, I can stay signed on as user but do install as Admin...avoids 99.8% of those "Can't do requested whatever...logon as admin" msgs.
And so, if one is running this way, or logged in as Admin, one would have access to the All-User options.
And, YES, I do get the time constraints issue!
I was just kinda ranting due to all the extra work I had to do to get everything fixed for "my way", ...and....simply putting it out there for your consideration...which you did, so
Thanks again!

Amazing! I did not know that. Yes, XP also.j_c_hallgren wrote:FYI: The single greatest keyboard trick I've learned about how to deal with this multi-user "nonsense" on W2K (XP also?) is to SHIFT+Right-Click on the ".exe" files for installs...this gives the added option to do a "Run As"! Here's another nice one I learned today:
You make a folder on the desktop and put anything in it u want and drag it to the top or left of the screen. I makes a toolbar and then u can drag it anywhere and resize it.

Until I learned that "Run As" trick, that first week I had this new-to-me W2K sys and was trying to get things installed that I had on old W98SE sys, I was cursing M$ and spending MUCH time in log-out U/log-on A/log-out A/log-in U cycles! As I knew that I should not be under Admin while connected to Net if it can be avoided...now I stay under User most time...there are some other pgms that I must run after install the same way..
Glad it may help you and others!

My understanding (from reading various newsletters and forums, but no real technical training) was that by being online as Admin, a hacker/virus/trojan/nasty would be able to do more damage given that Admin has more privledges...now I run a firewall, and other protection things, but was led to believe it was safer...anyway, it certainly doesnt hurt me since 99% of what I need to do can be done either in user mode or Run As...
