Hi
I would really like to buy this program but i have a problem that has been identified in a number of places on this forum but with no apparent solution. In the preview frame (The most useful bit of the program for me), word documents are not previewed but opened in Word. This is not what i want. Is anyone able to explain, fairly simply, what i need to do to ensure that the word documents are previewed and not opened. This would be much appreciated else i will need to purchase an alternate programme
Thanks
Steve

When you click on word file does it ask for download or open file?
I dont remember it exactly, but i think you have to uncheck the "show this dialog everytime" and click open.
BTW, searching for "preview" gave me a related post:

hope that helps.

i got this from the post serendipity mentioned:
1. Launch Windows Explorer.
2. a. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
b. In the File Options dialog box, click the File Types tab.
c. In Registered file types, click Microsoft Word Document, and then click Advanced.
3. From the Edit File Type screen, click to clear the Browse in same window check box, which toggles whether a Word document is launched outside of Internet Explorer.
4. Click OK to close the dialog boxes.
Microsoft Word Document is the file type you want to open in the preview panel.
this fixed the problem for me.

Welcome to Xy forums from me also, and I'll try and give this query a reply...steve256 wrote:Hi

As you may have determined, XY does not have any native embedded code to preview Word (or other Office) docs, but relies instead on the existing external Office programs to do "the heavy lifting" which thus means that XY has a smaller footprint and is more efficient on memory, etc.
As I understand it, some other file managers are much more bloated (and may also cost more) but may have the built-in ability to preview Office docs, so it's a trade-off...
While we'd love to have you as a XY user, if this built-in ability is that critical to you, then XY may not be answer...but you really need to seriously consider what other features that XY has that NO other program has! And the level of support is likely unmatched by any competing products! So XY may still have a chance to be your favorite file manager program.
Personally, when I first started with XY, I was having a problem with XY previewing .XLS (Excel) files and thus causing an "Object" worksheet to be opened, which affected my usage of Excel external to XY, so I now only 'preview' these files on demand which helped.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Also, the version of MS Office is critical here. AFAIK, the problem you describe only applies to Office 2007.

Well, steve256 is gone; but I got feedback from another user: the trick above works! So it really should go into the wiki...admin wrote:@steve256: Did this help?Muroph wrote:i got this from the post serendipity mentioned:

Okay, so just to get this right : the tip as described above is to NOT get the Word document be previewed/opened within XY's Panel, but opened in a new (Word) window instead, right ?admin wrote:Well, steve256 is gone; but I got feedback from another user: the trick above works! So, as I imagine the common question for users might be the other way around, to actually not get a new Word window opened, but a "preview" within XY, one needs to check "Browse in same window", right?

Yes, I would assume check... (I trusted the user and never tried it out myself). And yes, the common question for users is surely how to preview in the info panel.jacky wrote:Okay, so just to get this right : the tip as described above is to NOT get the Word document be previewed/opened within XY's Panel, but opened in a new (Word) window instead, right ?admin wrote:Well, steve256 is gone; but I got feedback from another user: the trick above works! That's right.
You have to check that box to make it open in the preview.
If it's already checked, you clear it, apply and check again.
This is what I did.
I just copied the other post from the microsoft site and forgot to fix that 'clear' part.
