Show in groups

Can't find it. I mean the view that seperates a block of similar files by an empty gap to the next bunch of similar files. Windows has it, too.

XY has no such functiom for the moment. try to use sort by type and colour type filters.

And show Grid with style "Highlighted Groups".

Been there, done that. Thought it might actually be better than "show in groups." But couldn't get it to work in a similar fashion. That's when I decided to revert to old-fashioned "show in groups" but couldn't find it.

Color Filters: Already in use for something else (to highlight recently modified files) - it overlaps and interferes with the type color.
Besides, I don't always know in advance what extensions I'll encounter in a large folder with mixed content.

It doesn't differentiate between many formats. Puts .js and .xlsm and other stuff into the same group, then starts another group with .png, .psd, .psp all in the same block.

But that's exactly what I need groups for: To pick out files from the heap of similar file formats. To immediately spot where .psd files end and the .psp files start. No need to scroll up and down to locate the first img.psp that comes after the last img.psd

And even more important: There may be a single Canvas image .CVI squeezed between .CVG and .CVX - that I'll miss unless I have some kind of visual indicator - a gap, a color, whatever.

Sort by Extension.

I did. Not working. To reproduce: Put one .png and one Photoshop .psd and one PaintShopPro .psp into the same folder, sort it by extension - all three of them will be treated as belonging to the same group, the file type is not recognized. Is this a bug? :bug:

Not a bug but done on purpose. The idea is to highlight groups as opposed to singular items (which are left white). Style "Alternate Groups" might suit you better.

Thanks. Not quite as good as "Show in Groups" but good enough for me. And important enough to sacrifice my beloved Alternate Row Shading :(

"Alternate Groups" not work in QUick Name Search tabs. Maybe a bug?

On the other hand: With "Highlight Groups" you can recognize singular items simply because they are white (unshaded). So it should do for you.

Search Results lists have their style independent from normal browsing lists. So you have to turn on Grid for Search Results separately to have it there.

Perfectly right. But when sifting through large lists I repeatedly missed single items that were NOT wedged between group chunks, but rather formed a little group of their own. A bunch of mavericks, so to speak, disguising as a group to hide from me, these little bastards.

You'd have to concentrate real hard on the extension to notice that a .p?? group is not a uniform group, but made up of single items. And be very wary of small chunks that may (or may not) be a real group.

I see. A solution could be to use alternate coloring with the Highlight Groups style, right?

Well, to be honest, my favorite solution is still something along the lines of "Show in Groups". It's easy on the eyes, a real no-brainer in terms of what settings to apply in what combination, and it has other advantages too (to single out an item is just one of many comforts)

Maybe a screenshot will convince you. Note that by clicking the "group heading" I select the whole group (yes, I know, I can do the same in XY by first clicking an item in the group, then pressing Ctrl+Alt+M, but again, it's nice to do this in an intuitive no-brainer manner, no icons to use up for it, no additional click, no shortcuts to remember)

This won't happen anytime soon.

What's your goal here? Maybe there are other ways...
