thumbnails with blue background in transparent areas

I've recently upgraded from XYplorer 9.9 to 12.2.

In version 9.9 the transparent areas of thumbnails for .png files have a white background. And the transparent areas of thumbnails .ico files have a transparent background (same color as the list background).

Now in version 12.2, the transparent areas of thumbnails for .png files is dark blue.

I can choose 'transparency grid', but this shows a grid for the thumbnail background in both .ico and .png.

How can I change from the dark blue background for transparent areas to some other color ?

Thank you

I have used XY for over 6 years. I use it every day, all day, in my work.

I am an artist, so thumbnails of graphics are a very important part of my use of XY in my work.

When I had a white background in the transparent areas of thumbnails, it was easy to see the true colors in the art work. Now that I am getting dark blue backgrounds in the transparent areas of my thumbnails, it makes it difficult to see the true colors properly.

My questions are:
Did I accidentally change some setting to cause the dark blue backgrounds ?
Am I the only person with this problem, or does any one else have dark blue in the transparent areas of their thumbnails ?

I would greatly appreciate any help with this.
Thank you very much.

Can you share a screenshot showing the problem and also the Thumbnails section of the Configuration?

Thank you for responding.

Here are the screenshots.
This only started when I upgraded to XY12.20. No other changes on my computer.

Thank you

I forgot to mention that I am using XP SP3.

I just put XY12.20 on my Tablet PC with Windows 7, and the thumbnails were the normal white backgrounds.

On my XP desktop, I switched between high-contrast (light text on black ground) and normal contrast (black text on white background), and both showed the blue backgrounds.

Again, the change to the blue backgrounds only occurred when I upgraded to XY12; no other changes on my desktop computer.

Did XYplorer 12.20 change what system color that it was reading on XP for the thumbnail backgrounds ?

Thank you

Hi, I've experienced some thumbnail display issues over the years as well. This may not be the only suggestion that solves your problem, but I would certainly uncheck (disable) super-fast thumbnails in Configuration - Thumbnails. Believe me with a decent computer, the thumbnails will still display quickly. Did you intentionally uncheck the "Use" box under Thumbnail configuration? Also, check the Colors, Styles and Color Filters in the Configuration to see if any setting there is unusual.

Edit: I forgot, also check Shell Integration in the Configuration. Don made some changes recently (defaults) that may have messed with your settings since it's been a long while since you updated.

Hmm.... I cannot recreate it with those settings. Here they show up as white or if I enable the transparency grid I get that.

We might need Don (admin/the only one who actually works on XYplorer) to look into this - but he seems to have gone on a vacation recently.

Some more thoughts:

Have you tried a fresh copy of XY? {1}

It looks like you might have heavily themed Windows - any chance of disabling that and giving it a go?
If not, does this blue match up with anything under the Window Color and Appearance settings:
In Windows 7: Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization\Window Color and Appearance > Advanced appearance settings...
screenshot.3.png
{1} If you are not sure how to do this follow these:
  1. Download the latest no install version.
  2. Extract it to a folder.
  3. Run XYplorer.exe

Thank you for your responses.

My main work computer is XP. It seems that this problem only occurs on XP.

It looks like TheQwerty tried to reproduce the problem on Win7.

I've already tried turning on/off 'super fast thumbnails', 'shell thumbnails', 'create all at once'; no change with any of these settings.
The 'USE thumbnail view backcolor' setting appears to change the list background color, and doesn't have any affect on the transparent areas of the thumbnails themselves.

I've turned my custom theme on/off; still the same.

I looked in Appearance | Advanced and no #0000FF blue.

I also opened my .msstyle in Resource Tuner (commercial resource editor), and could not find any #0000FF (000 000 255).

Are there any registry settings to look in ?

---------------------
While researching this, I also noticed some peculiarities in the mouse-down blow-up background colors.

On XP, XYplorer 9.9 shows white background on small .png's (dimension) and blue background on large png's.
On XP, XYplorer 12.2 shows blue background on all .png's.

On Windows7, both XYplorer 9.9 and XYplorer 12.2 show white background on all .png's.

So, again, this is an XP issue.
--------------------------

Thank you all for you help.

Indeed and I had no luck.

Not that I'm aware of - my hope with that thought was that XY might be using a system color but if you couldn't find it in those other places then that's probably not the case.

You didn't mention if you tried a fresh copy of XY, but with all the exploring you've done it sounds like you probably did and it made no difference.

Looking through the history of XY I found this...
History.txt wrote:v6.40.0032 - 2007-10-30 12:45
! Preview/Thumbnails of transparent PNGs (32-bit ARGB): Finally
worked around the known, admitted, but never fixed GDI+ bug that
forced me to show transparent PNGs on a black background instead
of white, in order to avoid the blue tint that otherwise results
from this bug. Took me two full days, yippee!!! And it's not even
any slower than the buggy MS original! From the pure coding
perspective this is the best code I've done since 256-level
Boolean search!
Not too helpful but shows signs that Don might better understand this.

Thank you.

What you wrote from the history.txt file describes the problem I am having.

If it would help at all, I am using gdiplus.dll version 5.01.3104 dated 14Apr2008, and gdi32.dll version 5.01.2600 dated 14Apr2008 on XP SP3.

I can run both XY12.20 and XY9.9 at the same time (from different folders) and XY9.9 produces white .png backgrounds and XY12.20 produces blue .png backgrounds.

I can then take the .dbits and .dat2 files that were updated with XY9.9 and copy them into the XY12.2 folder and XY12.2 will show .png thumbnails with the white backgrounds.

This has been a known bug in XP which was finally fixed by one service pack around 2010 or 2011 (after this fix I removed the workaround code that I had written before -- very complex stuff now in the trashcan). Did you update your XP to the recent service packs?

Thank you for clarifying the problem.

I am using Service Pack 3, the final service pack for XP, from 2009; but I had not done any bug-patch updates since then. I will try to find a more recent copy of the gdiplus.dll and see if that solves my problem.

Thank you for the excellent software; I use it all day, every day.

That should help because indeed it is a GDIplus bug.
