Image size in Preview - What is "Preview by Shell"

I have used the image preview for years - is very handy. I recently acquired a new camera (Olympus) and now the images shown are not the full size images that I used to see. Also the pixel count is shown as being different from what the actual pixel count is. Actually, when I click on one of these JPEGs the info window initially tries to display the true exif data, but only for a fraction of a second. Then the info display switches to one that says "Preview by Shell" with smaller pixel dimensions that what is really in the image. Is this a problem with having very large (12MB) images? I hope there is a way around this. I like being able to view the images in XYplorer.

Could you send me one of them for testing? Or preferably send me a download link (it might be too large for email).

I've been doing some more research. It seems that the problem is operating system dependent. The error I got was on my Windows XP notebook system. Attached is a screen view of what I see on the Win XP system. I took the ver 12.1 and installed it on a Win 7 system (64bit) and it worked normally as expected. I suppose I can try to uninstall and then reinstall to the XP machine and see if that fixes anything.
Notice in the Meta tab view, there is a note that says "Protected". On the Win7 system I see the exif data that I expect.

my guess: (also) hardware-dependent. memory + videocard are factors. shell preview sets in as last resort when native preview fails. image size (width x height) makes the differences. but sometimes also the moon. i have seen a lot here. works on fridays but not on mondays. windows is deep and mysterious. so: don't worry, the shell preview is better than nothing.
(i never got any email from you)

Can you tell me what "Protected:" means in the meta view? What is program telling me?

I don't know. Also "TreeSize" is strange. Looks like Microsoft shuffled the indices once again...

? But you are on Win7, right? I don't get TreeSize here.

2nd thought: You probably installed some shell extensions that caused a shuffle of the property indices. Nasty. The whole extended properties thing is one of not-so-great creations of MS.

Actually this problem was on a Win XP machine. I have one other XP machine that I can try to put the ver 12.1 on to see if it replicates over there.
On my Win 7 64-bit machine that I thought was so perfect....well...it isn't While I'm satisfied so far with the way images are handled in XYplorer,, music files may not be. This morning I was trying to play some music samples. I could not. The preview sub-window/frame did display the play icons. Well...I did not have a chance to figure out the symptoms there. When I do, I will send some images. later on that. I almost want to go back a few versions to see how they work. I did not keep older versions. Is there some place I can re-download older versions?
