Trying to make the switch from Total Commander to XYplorer

Post by dragonetti »

Hello,

I am trying to make the switch from Total Commander to XY (or at least become comfortable enough with it use it besides Total Commander).

I have some questions already answered but I still have some other issues / questions:

My apologies for this being a Total Commander geared "whishlist", I do not have the desire to let XY become TC but I think some things feel more naturally/better executed in TC (some things, NOT all things).
I have looked in the settings but I couldn't find solutions for the beneath "issues".
  1. Is it possible to wrap the tabs in vertical view? (CTRL F10).
    Something like this:
    Image

At the moment XY doesn't wrap, it shows tabs like this:

    Image
  2. The current way of creating and selecting a new tabset is a bit confusing. What I mean:
    - If you use the mouse, you have to navigate to the top and then select the briefcase icon.
    - How do you delete a tabset using the interface (GUI)? (The only method I know is by editing a config file).
    - The briefcase icon displays selectable tabsets from the currently active pane. The dropdown-menu doesn't give immediate feedback into which pane the tabset will be opened.

    Image

Assuming that the user is working in a verical viewmode where the leftpane is A and right pane is B.
If the user is in A and wants to quickly switch tabsets in B then the user has to switch panes first then go the briefcase icon. If you have a directly accessible dropdown button in each pane then you immediatly know in which pane the selected directory will be opened. No activation of target pane has to be done as that is already done by selecting the correct directory hotlist dropdown button.

    Image
  3. At the moment I do not have a clear enough visual indication which pane is active.
There is a dotted indication in XY but it only covers the selected file/folder not the whole line, in Total Commander I have the following:

    Image
  4. Can it be made possible in the future to save/edit tabsets like this:

    Image
  5. Is it possible to disable the tree view on the left side? (I never use it).

    Image
  6. Is it possible in the future to run a script as soon a certain directory is viewed/opened in XY?
  7. Does the portable version of XY leave registry traces while running (and after closing?)
  8. From what I have read an FTP function isn't XY's highest priority. I can understand it is a huge amount of work to implement a good (S)FTP function within XY. Bu I (as many others) would really really love one.
    As an alternative:
    - WinSCP has made 2 plugins for 2 file managers (FAR and Altap Salamander), Is it an option to contact the developer of WinSCP and ask what it would take to create a plugin for XY? If it is a financial issue, than you could poll the forums if users would pay for a plugin like that? (I would...!). I know the chances of this happening is very small but I hope it won't be dismissed immediatly.

    - Is it a possibility let the portable version of WinSCP and XY work together? As far as I have understood, it is possible to drag from XY to WinSCP. Is it possible to enhance this further?
A sort of WinSCP mode: when WinSCP is active and visible, a copy action initiated from XY would transfer the file to the previously active pane in WinSCP?
(I know I can map a drive to an FTP folder, but if you have many ftp locations or drive-mapping restrictions an ready to ftp manager can be very handy)
  9. Will it be possible in the future to have multiple button rows in the main window?

i'll answer only some things, that don't need many words and disscussion.
1. no such function currently, thought there were some requests.
5. Window - Show Tree.
6. there is a CEA feature on a roadmap, that will probably provide this function, but as you said -it's in future.
7. no traces aside from recent run line, as any other app you use.
8. XY has no plugin functionality.
9. there were request for that, so maybe one day.

6 - Yes, you can use XYplorer messenger (look at scenario C)
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 233#p82412
The message would look like this: "::load RunScript.xys"
and inside RunScript.xys:

Code: Select all

   if(    substr($path, 0, 7)     LikeI "Desktop") { Tab("rename", "<curfolder>|<xypath>\icon\Desktop.ico"); }
   elseif(substr($path, 0, 25) LikeI "D:\KPMG\To be transferred") { Tab("rename", "<curfolder>|<xypath>\icon\Favorite.ico"); }
   else                                     { Tab("rename", $path); }
I'm a casual coder using AHK language. All of my xys scripts:

I normally don't like to reply to these type of multi-item "make XY look like zz" posts made by new forum users but noticed in another thread that you said you'd bought XY so that's a good thing!

(3)It appears that you do not have "Shade inactive pane" in Dual Pane (Config) active...would that help?

Addendum: Use Config>Colors>=Other>=Inactive Pane to define shade used

(9) Not possible but possible alternative is switching toolbars as Don wrote in http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7985 -- I don't do so, but seem to recall seeing a script by someone for this.

Addendum: Found this thread that may help: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8454
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Hi and welcome!

Regarding tabset handling, maybe these two scripts could be of some help: I am using the second one, but maybe the first one could (better) suit your needs. I am not acquainted with the details of it, so I can not tell more.

Note that you can display tabset names in the Titlebar using the Titlebar Template: Configuration > Templates > Titlebar. I am currently using this one:

<tabset1> | <tabset2> (<app> <ver>) <path>

Thank you all above for the info!
It took away some hurdles!

The biggest "issue" at moment is that tabs are not wrapping, I hope that it can be solved in a future release?

Have you checked Configuration > Tabs > Flexible width ?

At the moment it is checked and tabs are not wrapping.
I tried several configuration combinations (in F9 options) but couldn't get the tabs to wrap.

We never said that would allow wrapping! XY does not yet support it and may not in future either...what he was suggesting was to allow tabs to vary in width which may give more tabs on the one row, ok?

I don't remember what Don's attitude to multiple tab rows is but I don't believe he's a fan of it...and personally, I can't understand how ppl work with so many tabs that it would require a 2nd row...

Yep, my fault, I should've been clearer. You could fit even more tabs by iconizing them (right click on a tab > iconize).

Found a place where he's commented on this: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8320

Addendum: As stated there, have you used the 'iconize' option with locked tabs?

Whoa easy take it easy!
I never assumed that XY in it's current state would support wrapping. That's why I am asking.
I just responded to the feedback. (I only wanted to let it be known that I tried several combinations in the F9 options window).

There are many reasons for having tabs on multiple rows.
- If your filemanager has a certain size at some point in time, sometimes a newly opened tab can lead to a situation where all the tabs (inlcuding the newly opened tab don't have enough room).
- Certain projects / tasks have more working-folders leading you to need a some more workspace for your tabs
- ...

I began my response with "Whoa easy take it easy!", I may have misinterpreted the way you responded. If so, my apologies. And my thanks for your feedback and info. (And to Marco).

I only replied as I did because eil's reply (1st one to answer) said it wasn't possible..and then Borut suggested some scripts as alternative...and then Marco suggested flexible width to assist..and then you said that it still wasn't wrapping so I was thus wondering why you thought it was possible when it was clear from those replies it's not, ok?

We try to be helpful and polite here but when someone doesn't appear to be believeing our answers, some of us regulars may get a bit frustrated...that's why I replied as such...hope you understand.

Marco's good intended feedback gave me the brief assumption that there was some hidden possibility I had overseen. But I understand what you are saying. Thanks again to everyone who responded.

Very true - I know the feeling! What follows is basically written for Don... :D

As I have been writing some longer time ago, in my work flow a tabset equals a project. One project has paths all over the place/network which are logically connected. Mostly, there are about 5-6 of them, but by some projects up to 9 of tabs make a tabset. I use only one pane at a time, concentrating on a single project and needing a fast access to its paths.

Of course, there are iconising, naming, what-not possibilities. Also, I am aware of the fact that a full path pops up on hovering. But actually, I would feel better to simply have more space per tab, to see more of its path at all times. Two lines for tabs in such cases would mean a lot.

However, maybe a solution would be some advanced overview and selection mechanism over paths of the tabs opened in active pane. Kind of: On hovering over certain place a popup menu with a list of full paths appears. By clicking on a menu item the appropriate tab becomes active.

EDIT: Actually, for this second idea of mine, almost everything is already there:
  • * Popup: The same one, which appears on the rightclick on empty tree space
    * Area: There is a tablist button. Make it show the list (at best the one just mentioned, containing tab paths from both panes) on hover, without a click!
