Problems with PNG files

PNG files saved with the new IrfanView v3.92 aren't shown correctly anymore (preview/thumbnail). I don't know if it is a TrackerV3 problem. Anyway all my other programs are showing these files correctly.

You're not alone!! Even the wonderful Windows Explorer cannot display either the thumbnails or preview. Xplorer² also produces a corrupt display and, as one of Nikos' beta testers I'm not going to make him very happy!
Works with 0 compression but anything else either crashes TrackerV3 or displays very corrupted. All my other graphics programs seem to be O.K.

Crashes??? Which image crashes TrackerV3?
I noted that the image in question (the one peter sent me) is a 4-bit PNG which is a rare format. Photoshop for example can read but not write that format.

Oh yes. Explorer has also problems with these files. And xplorer² too.
-> IrfanView is the problem!
I'll notify the author about this.

Donald, I've e-mailed you the PNG that crashes my system (it's 700K so don't be worried by the large attachment - it's not a virus!!)

Thanks. Yes it looks terrible. But no crash. ACDSee has no problems with it... it's truecolor format (16M colors). I can't do anything about it, because the problem must be some incompatiblity with GDIPlus.dll... which explains why Explorer can't do it either.

Result: it's a GDI+ bug. Microsoft has to take over...

But isn't it strange that this problem occurs right after the release of IrfanView v3.92?

IrfanView can create files that GDI+-dependent apps cannot render correctly. But many other programs besides IrfanView can, for example ACDSee, Photoshop, InternetExplorer (!). XP native PictureViewer however cannot -- it also depends on GDI+! The pattern is clear. I don't think IrfanView is to blame.
