Considering a replacement for Win 7 Pro's Explorer.exe

For the most part, I've learned to live within the limitations that M$ places on its standard file manager. My one exception comes with the MKV video format. With every other video format I use, the Details file listing will display the video's run time in the "Length" column. MKVs just leave a blank in that column.

This is the one and only reason I'm looking around for a replacement. Can XYplorer plug this hole?

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!

Just curious...why would anyone want to limit themselves to Win Explorer when appl like XY allow you to do dozens or hundreds of things that WE can't do and/or which require other appl's?

Since I'm not a W7 or MKV user, I can't say...but...I'd highly suggest you try out the trial vers of XY and see what you've been missing in many areas of file management!

When I have to use WE on someone elses PC, it's like going back in time to 2006 before I found XY!

Unlikely but you should test it. XY is portable. Download the no-install package, extract the EXE, run it, make your test, delete everything when the test fails (else send me money ;)).

Lack of imagination for the most part :) WE does just about everything I want done.

I've had a LOT of bad experience with "trial versions" over the years. I try to fully investigate a program before I run the setup.

I will admit, though, that the possibility of using regular expressions is intriguing. Even MS-DOS' use of ? and * is often better than WE's search capability, and that pales in comparison to what regexps can do.

I totally understand that and share the experience. You probably won't believe me (I would not myself :) ) but XY is different.

From almost daily experience with XY betas for several years I must say: Don (= admin) is right saying this!

I fully agree with Don...and the limits imposed by XY trial vers are very minor and you can really get a good feel for XY even with them...and as Don said, you do NOT have to install via setup, but can run it via no-install vers.

The features of XY that I miss most when using WE are the preview, the Catalog, Favorites, color of item based on file type, Mouse Down Blow Up, etc...
