Getting folder size ...(ESC) in the statusbar

Hi Don
Don't know if this is really a bug or not but..
If I am in a folder with a file being constantly updated, each time it is updated, the statusbar area directly below the listview changes from whatever it was displaying to the following:
Getting folder size ...(ESC) (I think this is close, it flickers somewhat quickly.)
(I have 'Show folder sizes in file list' turned on.)
Now, the flickering doesn't really bother me much, but there are consequences.
While the 'Getting folder size ...(ESC)' is showing, all else seems to stop.
If I am archiving files into an archive with WinRar, for example, WinRar stops compressing and only restarts compressing when 'Getting folder size ...(ESC)' disappears and whatever the statusbar was showing is back. (granted this happens quickly, but the stop/starts are visible.)
Actually *any* file operation stops until the switch back from 'Getting folder size ...(ESC)' happens, to some degree.

Is this a new problem?

I think it's new. I took the message away (as it was before yesterday).

No, can't be. It's just a message that's not removed properly. Check again.

hmm.. if I got it right, I'd say it's not new, nor is it a bug. This, I think, is because you have both autorefresh & show folder sizes on. So each time an item is updated (on current folder), XY refreshes and calculates all folders sizes as it's supposed too (according to your options).
What might "stops" or slows down WinRAR or any other process might just be because XY uses some ressource/disk access to re-calculate all your folder sizes, thus "interfering" with other process working on the same disk (autorefresh only, ie with show folder size off, would probably not cause this I think, or very less as XY would only quicky refresh the list without you even noticing it...).
Solution: move to another folder while WinRAR or w/e is working there. Works fine
I personnally don't use the show folder sizes option (I calculate on-demand, much fatser to me

) but I see this also for example when I'm downloading a file with a soft that don't/can't pre-allocate, ie I see the file growing & growing. I'm not sure if it slows down anything so it don't really bother me now that the refresh goes without loosing selection or anything, but I usually move to another folder to avoid all thoose unneeded (I think) disk calls that it might produce...

All true. But still there was a new part (showing "getting folder sizes... (ESC)" even on a smooth refresh) and also an older bug involved concerning the info panel incorrectly being filled with data. See the history of v5.00.0109 ... all fixed.

Hi Don;
Yes, I don't recall seeing this before. I don't think I saw this message flashing in the statusbar before.

Yes... but isn't "suspend refresh during file operations" suppose to prevent this?

Geez, I hope not, otherwise you can't call windows multi-tasking!
And besides, this happens even in a folder with only one subfolder in it, and it is empty, so I can't see XY bogging the system down at all.

Ok, this was starting to 'bug' me (no pun intended) so I started regressing versions.

0070 - we have a winner!
0070 does not have this problem. I can do whatever I want and there are no flickering of the message in the statusbar and there is *no* slowdown/stuttering in whatever file operation I am doing while something is being updated in the same folder.

Nope. File Operations is when you (aka XY) starts a copy or move operation. If you do so from another application, or do something else as (un)compress files it doesn't fall onto this category, as XY has no way to tell something is going so it should stops autorefreshing, nor when its done so it should turn it back on.

And you are sure that you have "Show folder sizes..." ON? If XY senses a change in the current directory (it does so only if auto-refresh is ON, of course), it starts a smooth refresh, (re-)calculating folder sizes if necessary, which takes a lot of action if there's deep nesting. I don't think that this has been different in 0070. The only new thing (unless I added a bug

) is the flashing label you see: I added that on purpose to tell you what's happening. If it flashes it just means that it's happening very fast, which is good.
Can anybody reproduce John's issue? I can't.

Hi Don;
I always have folder sizes on, *Always*, cannot use XY without it on.
I watch very carefully but do not see it even briefly. There is no flicker in 0070 and more important, I do not see the start/stops that it causes, in 0070, it is smooth.
Maybe its just a co-incidence, so they appear to be related but might not be? Dunno. All I know is, when that flashes in the statusbar, there is interference with whatever is going on.

Hi Jacky;
Ah, makes sense. I wasn't sure if it was just XY or all file ops but its just XY.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.

You can't see it in 0070 because it's not there.
Just for fun I took it out again in 0111. Curious what will happen on your side... we are just talking about a statusbar message here...

Hi Don;
I did some time tests, (WinRar and 7zip, compressing 1500 files, 85mb) and the difference with Show folder sizes on and off is not really worth investigating any further.
WinRar 7-zip
Show folder size Off: 30.9 30.5
On: 32.1 31.9
As you can see, we are only talking ~2 seconds.

Thanks for checking that. 2 (< 1.5 when I see your numbers) seconds seem to be a lot for some statusbar action though. As i said I'll leave the message away in 0111 and let's see what happens. Since we are talking of "smooth refresh" here, which is always a non-first browsing and hence extremely fast, the message is almost superfluous here anyway.
