I created a couple of catalog items to open selected items with a specific program.

Can I migrate/reproduce these actions to a user defined toolbar button?

Never mind. I found the answer: Use script command "openwith".

Works just great.

It sounds like something Portable File Associations was created for. Of course, if openwith works for you...
