Is there a way to position the "Info Panel" on the right side instead of on the bottom of the screen?

Is there a way to have the "Info Panel" pop-out allowing it to be placed on another monitor?

Hi and welcome,

Neither is possible at the moment, unfortunately. However, according to this item on the roadmap:

- Preview, Preview, Preview!
- - Preview Pane: New XL preview on the right window side and detachable (in a separate window)

...at least the Preview will be enabled for what you want.

Which parts of the info panel are you interested in? I assume the Preview and the Raw View?

Although I use the Info Panel for all of the tabbed selection choices, I mainly use it for Previews. Rather than using the assigned executable program to open the file, it is much less resource intensive and faster to use XYPlorer if I am just doing a quick check of the file.

I see that it is on the Roadmap. Is there an projected time frame for this and other items you have listed?

BTW, I recently had a revolutionary idea: The user "declares" a tab (preferably on the 2nd pane) as "Preview Tab", e.g. by relocating it to some pseudo path (e.g.: :preview:). This tab will preview any file selected in the 1st pane. One of the advantages of this approach is that you can have the Find Files tab open at the same time as the Preview. Sounds interesting?

VERY! I use the "Find Files" feature several times a day and like the tabbed format it offers. Sounds like the "Preview" tab in the 2nd pane would be a great addition.

Well... It is most certainly an interesting idea, but not for all types of users, I think. For instance, I am an "one paner" (either first, or the second pane, but not both at the same time). Also, I have XY always opened only on my first monitor and do not intend to stretch it to both monitors (in order to see both panes at the same time - nope, I just do not want that). So, in my case, I would be happier with a dedicated, detached and freely movable previewing form, which could be made active/inactive with a single key press.

I see your point but I'm not a friend of a detached and freely movable extra form. It seems to open a new box of problems concerning windows management etc.

Yeah, thinking about it there could be many sorts of Special Function Tabs (SFTs) (acronyms nicely nail it) so - if you want it - the 2nd pane could be turned into a suite of function-acec-GUI. Well, possibilities...

Other things like ":rawview"?

I'm also a single-pane guy most all the time but having dual vertical panes would allow me to preview enough to see decent part of file and still have a longer list of files visible...so yea, I think that would be a good idea...but for some reason, I thought this idea had come up some long time ago in another of the many threads on this topic.

When you're talking about this you always mention usage of the first (for source) or the second (for view) pane. But I hope you will not hardcode this in any way, so we can use it as wanted? E.g. display in 1st pane for selection-list in 2nd, or display in same pane (just other tab) as selection? I just don't think there's a need to restrict it...

While I understand this a bit there is one point: the abilities of the users! In between the time many people are working on multiple screens - and for optimal usage it's extremely helpful to have multiple windows to place on those screens. (If I'm right you only have one screen, and so don't see the advantages as much as others...)

Right. Almost. The problems concerning windows management also concern the user, because he has to make decisions about window positions. You cannot simply drag around the app window when there are two app windows.

OTOH I see the advantages and also the demand it for. I'm softening up a little bit at the moment. There are also some problems with Special Function Tabs that could be avoided with a Detached Preview Window (DPW)...

Sure: if I have 2 windows I have to handle 2 windows...

...but some programs have the ability to "connect" them, just by touching one to the other. Then you can handle them "as one". This is "full control" to the user!


And "being creative": when thinking about Special Function Tabs - could you think about the ability to include a windows "command window" ("DOS") in a tab? Could help, for example, by "integrating" file mgmt functions like compression / decompression into XY?
(OK: would still be better if a script could "receive" command output, and "send" further commands. Seems I'm dreaming... )

And with Thumbnails Deluxe I can do all my photo image preview stuff completely in XY .....
