Inactive pane color doesn't change

New mobo/cpu, new install of Win 7/64 and XYplorer (10.90.0414). Trying to change the color of the inactive pane in dual pane mode, but nothing changes no matter what the color chosen. What am I missing?
Btw, I wish setting the colors of both panes were an option.

F9 - Jump to settings... "shade". Activate it.

Activate what - that is, what different than described in my post?

It leads to "Shade inactive pane". If this option isn't activated, color changes for the inactive tab aren't applied.

I'm sorry, but I don't have a clue what you mean by "activate" beyond having dual pane active, which is what I've had from the beginning. In dual pane, I go to Colors & Styles, click on Inactive Pane, change the color, click OK a couple of times and nothing changes. Refresh, still the same. Close and reopen, no difference.

Again: Press F9, click on "Jump to setting...". Enter "shade" in the box on the lower left side. Hit <Return>. You are now in the options screen and "Shade inactive pane" is highlighted in orange. Activate that setting.

Although your instructions were still oblique - after going to the Jump to page for Shade, then what? - I figured it out.
The Colors & Styles page UI was not designed by someone speaking the same logical language that I do. Even the Inactive Pane coloring doesn't do the whole inactive pane, but only the columns to the right of Name. Which leaves part of both panes still colored the same.

Next time I post a video tutorial to set a checkmark in the options screen. <sarcasm off>
but only the columns to the right of Name. Which leaves part of both panes still colored the same.
Can't reproduce...

You kept using the term "activate," but there is no "activate" on any of pages involved. I'm thankful for your help getting me to the end, it's just that clearer instructions from the user's perspective would have gotten us there much more quickly.
Here's what I was referring to about the shading of Name and the other columns. The color of the Name column in the main (left) pane can be adjusted for when it's in focus, but not on the dual pane. Switching focus highlights the apparent limitation. It'd be nice if it were possible to make and keep whole panes were uniform.

@highstream: I don't know what you mean. All 4 Name columns in your screenshot have different colors. The color of the sorted column is calculated from the background color. If you don't want that you can turn if off in Tools /Customize List / Highlight Sorted Column.

I only see two Name columns, that is, pane columns, which is what part of the exchange was about. Your solution accomplishes what I want - thanks! - while its location separate from Colors & Styles supports my point that much of the UI for the shading/coloring could be made a lot more intuitive.

Agreed, but easier said than done. There is a lot of things to take into account here. Luckily, the default configuration seems to work for enough people to let me survive.

Fair enough. Another question about colors. I set the inactive pane to a custom color, but it doesn't include the line numbers on the left. When I didn't see the customer color in the pop up for Line Number Background, I entered the color code and then for better contrast increased the blackness of Line Number Text. That all works, except that the line number background color applies to both panes. Anyway to get it to apply just to the inactive one?

Nope, sorry.
