A new column??

One of those crazy ideas.
Imagine i am working on several files and i edit them and do all kinds of things with them. Wouldn't it be nice if i could have little tags for some files as 'editing' or 'in progress' or 'complete' etc?? I was thinking if you could have a new column in the list like say 'comments' or something like that which allows user to leave tags on files he is working on. Like how one can edit Created, modified or accessed dates in Properties' info panel, may be one can also edit 'comments' here which show up in the new column.

Not crazy and not new. I actually plan a comments column since long (NTFS supports it natively!), but, hell, why is time so one-dimensional!?!?

Oh!! Glad to know that. But would be nice if we have it since its sortable and also an option to set comments to several files at once.

*BUMP*
OK, just sometime ago I had this urgent need to sort files my way and I still think comments column would be a good way. Actually going by the trend i would call it "tags" column. Tags are very popular these days.
I would like to select a bunch of files and 'tag' them by typing few words into tags field in properties tab (just like editing timestamps for many files at once). With tags around it would be easier to sort files like the user needs or search files by tag names etc.

OMG... I would love that feature. Comment column, sortable or not...or Tags would be cool. Any other WE replacement product have anything like that? I would use it in so many ways. (Sort of Note to Self flags.)

Yep, sortable and searchable. But see my post above from 10 Jul 2006 16:40 -- it's still true.

Yes, I did see that. TIME. If only you could expand it. It's so linear, so narrow. <sigh>
Please put 'expand time' on your Planning To-Do List, Don. (Oh, it's already ON your list?)

I'd like that column, too. But in this case, not time is the problem but skills. It's very difficult to do (at least to do it with a fast performance). I'm researching regularly, but I'm still lacking the last puzzle pieces. Another new problem: under Vista these things got even more complicated...

Thanks for your quick answer. I understand it's difficult. It seems to me that support of descript.ion format is enough simple (at least for the user).
Anyway, good work.

Hi, I just registered XYplorer, withing a day of trying it out - which ought to show I like it. Seems it has almost more features that I may use immediately; but finding no support for descript.ion files is a disappointment. Just so admin would know there's more who use it.
For now, I guess I can stick with other software to describe those files that need it (mostly downloaded zips that I never got to try and would forget what they do)
Regards Emil

Hi and welcome to world of XY!
Glad to hear you so quickly realized the benefits of this great product!

Maybe you just need a better naming scheme?
I had a similar problem with my downloads folder until I started naming the files in this format: "Source - product - filename and vers" such as "
zabcat - xplorer2_lite - setup1.7.0.5.exe" or "
Imagenomic - NoisewareCE - Setup2501.exe" because some vendors names are SO different from the product name that locating it months later can be a challenge! By doing it this way, I can very easily get back to where I got it from...in some cases, it may be a more generic "sourceforge_net" but this scheme has really worked well for me.

well, sure, but then the column width takes up the whole screen
It is not such a big deal, but why not try for https://www.xyplorer.com? A field in tags, as someone suggested, would work fine, too, I imagine. Just to keep the author on his toes

BTW, you've got a malformed opening quote tag at beginning of above post...change the "/" to "[" to fix.
My name column width isn't
that wide! I still have enough room for size, modified, type, attr, created and len cols, plus I have tree showing on a 1024x768 screen.
Anyway, I'm not disagreeing with the wish...just suggesting an interim alternative that has worked for me.

More than one new column

Hi, I love your software.
Even though, I would like so much if it could help me to multi-dimensionally organize my files better.
What do I mean by that?
Currently, if I'm an organized individual, when I store a file through a directory structure I will follow a category order for both naming the file and choosing the folder where it will be stored.
Every time I need to group the files by another way, I have to browse through a lot of folders.
That would be solved by XYplorer if it allows the user to edit some custom extended properties of a file when he is on the details view. The files could then be sorted or filtered by their custom extended properties. Pretty like an Excel spreadsheet, but simpler and natively linked to a file.
It would, then, let us use the file system somewhat as a spreadsheet.
I hope that you find this suggestion would be the most important thing to implement, and develop it very quickly
