I don't understand. There are so many smart softwares to compress and extract...

Personally I use BandiZip. It can show a preview by right click on the archive file (works perfectly in XYplorer), clicking on the preview will open the archive (fast), and you can set double clicking action in many ways (for me, extract immediately). I'm content.

He probably wants to be able to explore zip archives right inside XYplorer (zip archives should be treated as a "file system"). No, the preview doesn't work that way. Trying to extract a subfolder from an archive doesn't work (at least for all archives).

It can be a comfortable opportunity during waiting for the new function. XY has so many advantages, that it is no point in staying away because of lacking of this feature.

Why should there be find files in XY when there are so many file search tools?

Why should there be image preview in XY when there are so many nice image viewers?

Why should the info panel contain file properties or raw view when you could just right-click the file and choose properties or use an external hex viewer?

The answer is efficiency and convenience. The reason people are asking for being able to access archives like folders from within XY is because if you spend more than 5 minutes a day working with archives it is much more efficient and convenient than having to run external programs .

That was almost two years ago, I don't know if there has been any progress. I appreciate that it is a non-trivial thing to do, but it is one of the things that seems to appear at regular intervals here .

That being said, while I would love archive support, the main thing preventing me from using XY is the whole single-threaded issue .

all those are connected with files organizing "as they are" -no internal adds used, so all is provided by system basically. while archives are just shells for real files + there is no real "preview" for archives- it's only "unpack, but don't show me".
one can expect file manager to provide video preview, but one must understand it's not a video player = manager can provide preview only via codecs. in situation with archives, arch-tools are "codecs" themselves.
on the topic: i see zip is rather common in some places, but for me, personally, only rar matters.

Yes, there are lots of good solutions for dealing w/ archives, but here is why I think native support would be a significant improvement to XY, convenience aside-- One of XY's big selling points is portability, being able to stick it on a usb stick and take it to another pc. Having archive management capabilities in those circumstances, w/o relying on having other utilities or the right version of Windows installed on the other pc, would be a plus.

Incidentally, I would offer the same argument for ftp integration. Although I don't personally have extensive need of either feature at present, and all but never take XY "on the road", I am invested in seeing XY keep its competitive edge.

I've read a lot of the pro- and anti- arguments on this and although I think I sympathise with the anti- camp, there's a strong case for pro just in the "keep file management tasks as seamless as possible" argument.

For instance -- just to bring up the competition for a moment -- in Opus, I can create a new archive, open it in a second pane, and use the copy or move button to zap files in the one pane to the second. It feels sensible and seamless and natural.

I can't even find a script (let alone write one -- I'm not that proficient yet) that I could use or modify even to get close to replicating that workflow in XY, maybe using portable 7zip or something (yes, I use XY portably far more than not, so I can't expect to rely on anything installed.)

A show-stopper? Clearly not. But it's the one attribute of Opus that seriously gives it an edge over XY, in terms of the functionality I use and care about, anyway.

XY has so many edges over DO that I can give them that one without sweat. But thanks for the input. It is on my list and will eventually come.

Thank you. Archive native support is greatly appreciated as I work with it most of the time.

I would also appreciate this! I liked and used the natvei archive integration quite often when working with FreeCommander.

I think this workaround is buried in the forum somewhere, and was alluded to above by highend, but to refresh...

In short add zip to the Web & Office Files preview category.

In step-by-step detail:

1. From the main menu select 'Tools' > 'Configuration...'
2. In the 'Configuration' dialog... Select the 'Previewed Formats' item from the list of pages on the left.
3. In the 'Previewed Formats' page...
   1. Select the 'Web & Office files' Category.
   2. Click the 'Add...' button.
   3. In the 'Add another extension to Web & Office Files.' dialog...
      1. Type 'zip'.
      2. Click OK.
4. Click OK to close the 'Configuration' dialog.
5. In the active pane...
   1. Navigate to and then select the Zip file you wish to view.
   2. If the 'Preview' pane is not already visible select 'File' > 'Preview' from the main menu.

The preview pane should now display the contents of the currently focused & selected Zip file.
Extracting items works well, and adding items to the archive is possible using copy and paste or drag & drop from a source other than XY's lists, since it's impossible to select a different item while keeping the preview open.

While testing XY with dummy data, Windows explorer popped up occasionally. Didn't worry about it, figured I'll enable the right switch later. Well, now that I've started using XY on real world files - I begin to realize - there is no switch. This hits me like a tidal wave. I am drowning in Win Explorer pop-ups.

Can't get this to work. Copy To ... Tabs/Favorites/whatever won't work, drag'n drop doesn't work either.

Surely, there's got to be a better way of handling Zip files than what's described here? Could someone please help me along with some kind of decent workflow?

No one? This sudden silence is scary. I am getting uneasy gut feelings about this.

There's got to be a smooth way to handle ZIP, right? Scripting, ini-tweaks, whatever it takes, I don't care. Someone, please???
