From time to time I get emails or postings complaining about XY starting up somewhat slower than some other file managers. I'm always surprised because on my machine (an Athlon XP 2000+, WinXP SP2) XY loads in about 1.2 seconds on the average (the time is displayed in Configuration/Advanced at the bottom) which is fast enough for me.
Here are some thoughts that might help clearing up the issue:
(1) When XYplorer's main window is shown after start up, everything is done. You won't see any stuff still loading, building up, filling, flickering, moving, adjusting, completing... all this is done before anything is shown.
(2) XYplorer uses no splash screen to manipulate you psychologically into something that just feels like a faster load time.
(3) Contrary to many other file managers, XYplorer starts up in the same directory that you left it in. If this path is deep down in some file system branch, a lot of browsing has to be done to correctly show the tree expanded down to this location.
(4) If the tree initially (depending on your start up path) shows many folders that (a) contain a lot files, but (b) contain no subfolders, then the start up time will be increased because determining the expandability of those folders takes longer than average.
How the startup time might be influenced by XYplorer's configuration:
(1) If you checked "Show folder sizes in file list" (Configuration/Advanced) start up will surely be longish. Because of the necessary recursive browsing this function takes its time.
(2) If you checked "Expand destination node in tree" (Configuration/General), it adds to the start up time.
How the startup time might be influenced by your computer's configuration:
(1) A virus scanner in the background slows down everything. Halt it for a moment and check out the diifference.
I'll ADD to this list later... gotta go now.
