Recovering from SireFef Trojan

Post by TestMeister »

I just spent a week cleaning up and restoring 2 computers from this malware. Everything seems pretty normal at this point (including scans are now clean) except that whenever I close XY, I get an "Access Denied" error and it does not save my XY config changes.

I have already check my permissions on the XY programs folder which are ok but clearly the virus hosed something. Any idea what I should check?

Thanks!

Remember that some things are now saved in application data folder and not program folder so you may want to check on that part of setup...it all used to be strictly in program folder but that caused access issues with some OS setups.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

This virus really hosed my system. It reset my Admin privileges meaning it removed the proprietary control that the Administrator account has. If anyone else runs into this here is a fix from MS:

My XY problem was caused by my ACL being re enabled after I reinstalled my virus software.
After I turned it off my XY errors went away.

After going through all this I can see the benefit of using ACL but it seems to crippling no matter how low you set it.
Do many of you use it and if so, where do you set it?

Thanks!

I have been using SuRun as a substitute for ACL for several years. Currently I am using it on Win 7 64-bit and I am satisfied with it in terms of usablity and security.
