Copy Config file from XP to Win 7?

Assuming XYplorer.ini has all my settings, I've been trying to copy it from my XP set up to a Win 7 laptop installation. So far, straight copying or editing the first 3 lines for Win 7 doesn't hold on the next restart. Any other way? Thanks,

Thanks for that reference. Of course, the irony is (or appears to be) that it takes another file manager to accomplish this. ;)

One small thing that would aid the transfer process is if the default name of the settings folder were something like "XYplorer application data" instead of using the same name as the application folder, XYplorer.

Copy Configuration files from one PC to another PC

I could imagine something like this will work:

on the "old" PC
- start XYplorer
- go to "Files > Settings" and execute "Save All Settings"
- go to "Files > Settings" and execute "Backup Application Data Folder..." > to an folder you will find again
(Note: you need to access this folder from the "new" PC. So have this on an thump drive, network share or burn an CD)

on the "new" PC
- start XYplorer
- go to the folder with the backup from above
- execute "Edit > Select > Select All"
- execute "Edit > Copy"
- execute "Go > Go To Application Data Folder"
- right click at "NewItems" and chose "Explorer"
- close XYplorer!

- in WinExplorer go one level up from "NewItems" to the main XYplorer Application Data folder
- in WinExplorer execute "Edit > Paste"
- chose [OK] if you are asked to overwrite

Done

HTH? :D

Did you try that? Here at paste, XYplorer gave the 'files are busy' message. I think the assumption of XYplorer's transfer instructions is that the app hasn't been installed yet and thus another file manager, such as Win Explorer, will be used.

Ah, i see you are right and i forgot this part again.
I have edited my post.

Maybe i should think about an batch:

On the "new" PC
- start XYplorer
- go to "Help > Various Information"
- select and copy the "App Data Path: "
- modify the batch and paste in the App Data Path
- save the batch to the backup folder
- close XYplorer
- execute the batch (xCopy /kreisch All*.* to %AppDataPath%)

Maybe Don could even create such an batch with current ADP e.g. from menu "File > Setting > create Import Batch"
with an message "Save the batch to the folder with the data files, close XYplorer, execute the batch"

No irony: You copy the stuff to USB stick using XY from the source OS, then, under target OS, you run XY from USB and copy the stuff to the OS hard disk. Where's the problem?

As my initial post suggested, I ran into a problem with bringing in the desktop's .ini file after installing XPplorer on the laptop. I used a file manager on the laptop to copy in the two folders, rather than running it from the USB stick.

I don't understand what problem you had. Might be my lacking English. Please explain again.

Certainly. If the best way to install XYplorer on another computer is to start it from the USB stick and then copy over the folders, please note that the instructions on the FAQ do not say that. I really did not think about it, since I already had installed the app on the new laptop; the only problem was old config file wouldn't hold. So I opened XYplorer on the new computer and tried to copy off the USB stick, however that doesn't work for some of the files when XYplorer is open. That's why I had to switch over to Windows Explorer. However the migration is accomplished in Windows, some file manager has to be open.

Stefan suggested creating a batch file to install XYplorer directly from the USB stick. That was in reply to my other suggestion, which was that it would help if the default application data folder (in XP's Docs & Settings) were renamed so it is not the same name as the application one. Stefan's suggestion solves that another way.

Hope this is clearer.

That's the part that interests me. What does not work? The only thing I can think of is that you closed XYplorer with saving which then of course will overwrite the config files.

Don't understand the part about closing. When I copied one of folder contents from the USB stick with XYplorer open on the drive being copied to, I got the standard message about something being in use (and probably needing to close the app first).

Hm, there must be some fundamental misunderstanding here. Are we talking about upgrading or migrating? I've been assuming the former.
