Out of my reach I'm afraid. This is an intrinsic KS of the Windows Edit control.

When I press Shift-End to select this extra stuff before hitting Delete, it also selects the extension.[...]
Maybe this helps too as an workaround? (in case one doesn't know this)
1.)
Filename:
New TextfileExtra stuff.txt
2.)
F2
Cursor right before "Extra"
Shift+End
Results in:
New TextfileExtra stuff.txt
3.)
Shift+Ctrl+Arrow left
Shift+Arrow left
Results in:
New TextfileExtra stuff.txt
4.)
Del
Results in:
New Textfile.txt

Another solution would be to optionally show the rename box without the extension.

Hmmm, not a bad idea -- although not sure I'd go so far as to turn something like that on...
...and I'm afraid sometimes you
want to change the filetype...
