I would simplify my life quite a bit if you could add in the "You appear to be downgrading..." dialogue box a button that will directly take you to the download page on the XY website.

But you can get "You appear to be downgrading..." only when you already had downloaded and used a newer version than the current.

Yes, but since I sync (using Dropbox) my config file between two computers this occurs every single time a new version comes out...

EDIT: Maybe another idea would be that XY, when it detects that, will automatically trigger the online version check window instead of that yes/no msgbox. then it would be only one line of code for you to program that AND it would look nicely consistent.
