TAFKAX

Wow, it's almost 5 years now:

Code: Select all

v4.40.0000 - 2005-11-26 19:15
  *** TrackerV3 is now XYplorer!
And you know what? XYplorer was a bad choice. IMHO

I need a new name.
Relax: The xyplorer.com URL will remain here, the forum will stay here, and the new app will work with the XYplorer license keys. All lifetime licenses will stay valid, of course. The trouble for the existing users will be minimal.

The TAFKAX Contest

I offer 100 Euro via PayPal to the winner of the The-App-Formerly-Known-As-XYplorer (TAFKAX) contest. The winner is the person who (as first) finds the new name for XYplorer. Here are some guidelines:

MUST
- The name must be easily pronouncable for most people on this planet.
- When you see the name you must know how it is pronounced.
- When you hear the name you must have a good idea about how it is written/spelled.
- It should be catchy and memorable, without sounding like the name of a virus.
- The name must not be used already by any other well-known software.
- The name must not be a registered trademark like "explorer".
- The domain http://www.(name).com must be available.

NICE TO HAVE (but not essential)
- The name should have some connection to file management (fantasy allowed)
- If the name contains the sequence -xy- then I don't have to remake the icons.

CONTEST RULES
- Simply drop your idea if you have one (and please check that http://www.(name).com is free). You don't need to explain why you think it is good. And I will not explain why I think it is not good. There will be no debate whatsoever. When I see a name I like I will stop the contest and deliver the price money. When I find a name myself I will stop the contest and deliver no price money. :P
- I also have no interest to discuss whether changing the name is a good idea.

So, go for it, 100 Euro can be yours!

:D

 Well, ok...but...if you had an advertising budget of multiple thousands of dollars to promote the switch and get known again, that would be one thing but you don't...or are you hiding a stash of cash somewhere?

It's taken a few years to finally get people and numerous web sites (like reviews) converted to XY and now you want to do it again? Sorry, but I just don't get it...I know I'm not a marketing person but I've seen it occur on other sites/products and it often takes many months, if not years, to get to the same level of awareness among consumers that was had before.

I know I can't stop you so all I can offer is my comment that while XYplorer may not be the easiest to pronounce, it is memorable enough and unique enough and that matters, I think....and any new name needs to be unique in any TWO letter abbreviation/logo as well.

Addendum/Update: Here's a listing of what we're competing with already: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... e_managers

I like the sound of FARexplorer/FORexplorer (just off the top of my head).

-- domain is available
-- easy to pronounce and write
-- "explorer" is included to give a clue as to what it is
-- FAR could be an acronym (For A Real) or it could just be a part of a portmanteau

I know you said no explanation needed, but hey...what's the harm? :)

Ok, so is SkyFrontier going to post a list of a dozen or so ideas every half-hour to this thread? Please come up with your best ones (maybe half-dozen or so) per day at most instead of just throwing out every random thought here or we'll have a 25 page thread by the time we're done at the current rate, I'm afraid...sorry.

Possibly too similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAR_Manager I think.

Don't blame me, I like brainstorming (and it's a perfect raining day for that).
If I was throwing out stuff like infinite variations on the same theme, I'd agree I was supposed to filter and give the best ones - that's not the case.
Besides that, I see no limit stated on the rules, no reason for such and c'mon - some of them are VERY COOL!!!
-and no, it's not about the money - it's about opportunity (yeah, my house/office cleaning day can wait!) and make part of xyHistory!

Beyonder (redirects to a generic search site, as well as thebeyonder.com)
VASTplorer
ChaosPlorer
Argonaut (redirects to a generic search site)
Inner File Manager
FileDeeper
AceXplorer (redirects to a generic search site)

Perhaps, but: a) my interpretation of the acronym is different b) could be a blessing in disguise towards hinting at what kind of software it is.

File Roulette (http://fileroulette.com/ redirects to a generic search site)
DataKeeper (redirects to a generic search site with a handsome smiling girl)
FileGatherer
magneticFM (magnetic.com redirects to http://m.magnetic.com/)
QuanticFM (http://www.quantic.com/ is owned)
FASTplorer
CombinerFM (www.combiner.com is less expensive... $2,910 =| )
FileLabFM (there's JUST an Apache denial message at http://www.filelab.com/)
Excess/ExcessPlorer
FileInterface (thought as File:Interface, which doesn't work when it comes to file paths... but visually/phonetically has some style!)

Well... let me know if you want more ideas (probably more to come later, if that wasn't too late).
Hope this helps, at least!

From Wikipedia file manager template, here's what exists in Windows and other OS's:
  • Unix-like = Dolphin · emelFM2 · gentoo · GNOME Commander · Konqueror · Krusader · Nautilus · PCMan File Manager · ROX-Filer · Thunar · Xfe
  • DOS = Dos Navigator · DOS Shell · Norton Commander · Volkov Commander · XTree
  • Windows = Altap Salamander · CubicExplorer · Directory Opus · FAR Manager · FreeCommander · Magellan Explorer · SpeedCommander · STDU Explorer · Total Commander · Windows Explorer · WinSCP · xplorer² · XYplorer · ZTreeWin
  • Mac OS = Finder · Path Finder · Xfile · Disk Order
  • Cross-platform = Double Commander · Mad Commander · Midnight Commander · MuCommande
And looking at this table, we see a fair nbr of "commander" and "explorer" usages, with "manager" also as common...now here's the other table I mentioned before:
Windows-only file managers
A43 File Manager
Altap Salamander
CubicExplorer
Directory Opus
Explorer++
ExplorerXP
FAR Manager
File Manager
FileQuest 7
FreeCommander
NexusFile
Nomad.NET
Q-Dir
SE-Explorer
SpeedCommander
STDU Explorer
Total Commander
UltraExplorer
Unreal Commander
Windows Explorer
WinSCP
xplorer²
XYplorer
A few listed here are not in the first table and some of these are essentially dead products and/or so obscure as to not really matter but again the "commander"/"explorer"/"manager" verbiage is common so of the three terms, I think the one we should concentrate on is "explorer" since "commander" implies a more DOS-style GUI to me as does "manager' to some extent.

Thus maybe something as simple as "FilePlorer" could work maybe? (BTW, FileXplorer seems to exist but only as 2005 vers.)
Or "DirXplorer" which also hooks into the Dir Opus naming style.

And both "FP" and "DX" as abbreviations for a FM don't appear to exist so that aspect is covered as well, and either could serve as icon.

I'm not going to try and stuff the ballot box but wanted to throw in a couple of ideas based on above research of other FM's...and...the cash prize doesn't mean that much to me so I'd refuse it as I'm sure that Don has more need for it to support his personal life! 8)

My first thought was it's portable .. Portable Explorer .. portablexplorer.com and portableexplorer.com are both available to alleviate any misspelling problems.

Navigating folders .. how about Folder Pilot .. folderpilot.com is available.

If you're already piloting over your folders, I guess that makes you a File Aviator, fileaviator.com is available, but not that easy to spell .

It's quite remarkable that most of even the stupidest names I can come up with are already registered.
