new office preview

I'm experimenting with a brand-new Office preview which gets rid of the known problem (with Office 2007 and later) of seeing download prompts instead of showing the file contents.

I would need some BETA testers here around mid of July (after the WC finals). So please, everybody who can reproduce such problem with previewing e.g. DOC files stand in line at this thread.

I also need BETA testers for a brand-new WordPerfect preview, also after the finals.

Thanks,
Don (XY Dev)

Sure, count me in.
I am using Office 2010, (Home and Business, though that should not make any difference I hope),the released version, and have all kinds of older .doc files as well as .docx files from both beta and release version. Same with .xls and .xlsx.

Hello - I just downloaded 9.20.0206 beta and here are the problems:
.doc files: still getting the 'want to open or save this file'
.docx files: they open as soon as I click on them - ONE click, no double click. No preview.
.zip files: still getting the 'want to open or save this file' dialog
.pdf files: displaying ok in the preview tab

This is marginally worse than living with 9.20 without the doc previews, so I think I will revert back from the beta, unless you want me to try something specific.
BTW - is this the proper place to raise the issues, or is there another thread or forum that I should be posting the stuff?

Thanks. Sorry to have rushed you. Is this the place where you will announce when to try again?

Yes, it's planned for 9.40. Public experiments should start next week...

So... now that we are at 9.5+ - is something going to happen on this front? I would very much like to preview my Office files...

Sure I don't know how you will do it...

...but I'd just ask you considering the use of MS office viewers, i.e. free MS-programs to view office files (like Word, EXCEL, ...) without the risk of modifying them. It seems to me such a "viewer" is best to "preview" something, better than EXCEL etc itself. And: they also can be used to (pre)view office files by users not owning MS office...

(If not by default, maybe by use of config or tweak?)

Tell me more about it. I just got stuck with my original plans.

Yes - that's it!
I didn't look at the size - and it didn't matter for me...
And by the way: all can legally be downloades at MS.

Sure I wouldn't think it should be delivered with XY. But I would love if XY would be able to use it.

Not really my "style". Not my idea of portable. But thanks for the tip.

Maybe a question of view?

If I understand it right, for your current version of preview of, for example a .xls file, you (implicit) use EXCEL, beeing still less portable, and the user even has to buy it for each system he wants to use it on? Or am I wrong?

I think where there are EXCEL files I can expect EXCEL is installed. But I cannot expect an EXCEL viewer is installed.
