File List Blank
File List Blank
Hello,
I'm having experiencing a problem where XYplorer won't properly draw the file list or tree areas. It's difficult to describe so I've attached a couple images that show what's happening.
I've tried running the current version (9.20.0100) and the current beta (9.20.0102) running on Win7 x64. I've tried the installed version to C:\Program Files (x86)\XYplorer and the portable package to a folder that my user has full rights to. I've uninstalled and removed the XYplorer app data folder from <User>\AppData\Roaming\, restarted and then reinstalled. Nothing is helping. The odd thing is that when I run as an Admin the problem goes away so I'm guessing something wonky with a secured file or folder but I'm not sure where to look.
Has anyone seen this or have thoughts on how I can fix it?
Thanks!
-Wes

Re: File List Blank
Sounds like the Junctions again.
Try File > Show Items
Make sure 'Show Junctions' is ticked.
Then report back and tell us if you can see the files.

Thanks for the reply!
Unfortunately 'Show Junctions' is checked.
Any other ideas?

Re: File List Blank
This looks like a low level issue to me. Something is wrong with your system...

I don't see mentioned whether you have the same problem with Windows Explorer?akmad wrote:Thanks for the reply!

My guess, assuming WE can't see the contents of C:\Code either, would be file/folder permissions, since running as Admin solves it. Assuming that you don't need such strict permissions on these folders and files, you could relax the permissions for the problematic folder and all files and folders beneath it, for the Users group to include Read & execute, List folder contents and Read.
Does the development software you use, need to run elevated? That may explain why its output isn't readable as a non-elevated user.
Re: File List Blank
Neither the development software nor the folders in question require elevated access. Also, I should mention that XYplorer 8.80 was working fine until my user profile randomly could not be loaded at startup. I didn't immediately notice the issue and started up XYplorer which perhaps overwrote some setting somewhere? In any case, my profile is loading properly now and I've uninstalled, removed the XYplorer AppData from my user profile and restarted a few times since then in hopes that whatever is hanging around will get removed.nas8e9 wrote:Does the development software you use need to run elevated? I agree that this is likely a security issue; I'm just not sure what file/folder/regkeys to check. I cannot find any access denied errors with Process Monitor and I'm not sure where else to look.

For clarity's sake:
- Windows Explorer *does* correctly display the contents of C:\Code?
- XYplorer still *doesn't*?
*If* WE *also* doesn't display the contents of C:\Code, you may want to check the file permissions of C:\Code via its properties > Security tab. Does the Users group (selected in the top half of the dialog) have the following permissions (listed in the bottom half):
- Read & execute;
- List folder contents;
- Read?

Note that C:\Code was just an example; EVERY folder shows no files, though the status bar does list the number of files in the selected folder. Also note that there is a redraw issue as well. Look at the second image I attached to the original post and you'll see that the tree view is messed up at the bottom and the scroll bars don't appear. I'm not sure if or how this is related...?
Re: File List Blank
So it's not a file permissions issue. The baffling thing is that, as far as I understand, you've already tried a completely default XYplorer configuration. There are some non-default settings in XYplorer which can affect the visibility of files, but to have a default config do that...akmad wrote:Windows Explorer correctly displays the contents of C:\Code and XYplorer still does not.

It's a long shot, but is there anything odd about the file and folder attributes? (You probably need to run the attrib command from an elevated command prompt to get the full view.)
Re: File List Blank
Two final guesses: are the errant folders under some form of version control or alternatively, are they monitored by a backup/synchronization tool? Separately, are the hidden files/folders open in any program (Sysinternals' Process Explorer, among other programs, should be able to tell)?

Nothing odd that I can see:nas8e9 wrote:It's a long shot, but is there anything odd about the file and folder attributes? (You probably need to run the attrib command from an elevated command prompt to get the full view.)
A C:\Utilities\XYplorer\CatalogDefault.dat
A C:\Utilities\XYplorer\LicenseXY.txt
A C:\Utilities\XYplorer\ReadmeXY.txt
A C:\Utilities\XYplorer\TipOfTheDay.htm
A C:\Utilities\XYplorer\XYcopy.exe
A C:\Utilities\XYplorer\XYplorer.chm
A C:\Utilities\XYplorer\XYplorer.exe
A C:\Utilities\XYplorer\XYplorer.url
I'm leaning towards just accepting that it's a "low-level system issue" at this point as I'm just not seeing anything else. This happens with the default configuration and there are no access violations that I can see for any resource (file, folder, regkey). Comparing Process Monitor dumps between and normal and admin session just so that the admin execution session enumerates the selected folder and the normal session doesn't. There is no preceding error that I can see (though I'm no Win32 developer and may be missing something).
It's just extremely odd that this is literally the only application that I've noticed any strange behavior. If this were the result of a underlying system error I would expect other applications to exhibit some type of problems.
I love XYplorer but I cannot reinstall windows just to use it! Thanks very much for your help; please let me know if you think of anything else to try.

Re: File List Blank
This isn't a case of a few errant folders. Nothing shows up in the file list for any folder, network path, volume, or special folder (eg, My Computer).nas8e9 wrote:Two final guesses: are the errant folders under some form of version control or alternatively, are they monitored by a backup/synchronization tool? Re: File List Blank
I repeat, looking at your screenshots in the first post of this thread clearly tells me that this is a low level drawing issue. The statusbar seems to display the correct number of items and bytes (right?).admin wrote:This looks like a low level issue to me. Something is wrong with your system...
Something might be wrong with your gdi+ installation. I assume you have already rebooted Windows?

Yes, I've restarted many times. Also note that both the file list and draw issues go away when running XYplorer as an admin. Likewise, this is the only application that has any type of drawing issue (as far as I've noticed).admin wrote:Something might be wrong with your gdi+ installation. Re: File List Blank
I would not have thought that this is possible, but it looks like Windows has its bugs now separated for each user account.akmad wrote:The statusbar is displaying the correct number of items and bytes.admin wrote:I repeat, looking at your screenshots in the first post of this thread clearly tells me that this is a low level drawing issue. I have no idea what's behind this bug, but it looks like a combination of user rights and a system file or component related to drawing. Hm. Is there anything special about your Windows installation. Are you using any 3rd party skins or similar?
