"Preview Formats" window freeze <SOLVED>

Post by MCS »

I just updated to 9.20, I run on Win7 x64.

When I go to Configuration --> Preview Formats and click anywhere in the upper box containing "Text Files", "Web & Office Files" etc. with checkboxes XYPlorer instantly freezes and takes max CPU usage. I can't click anywhere and I can't close the program without ending the process from task manager. I can click normally in the lower box with the list of file extensions and checkboxes, but not the upper one.

I have no idea what is causing this. I do have a slightly tweaked windows and have disabled some unneeded services, otherwise I don't have a large amount of installed programs.

Any help?

EDIT: There is no memory leak involved, in task manager the used memory by xyplorer does not increase or decrease.

Can't reproduce with 9.20.0007 on Windows 7 x64. Could you try the latest beta?

Latest beta (.007) tried, no difference.

To complete the usual troubleshooting steps, could you try with the default config?

The easiest way to do that is to copy XYplorer.exe to an empty folder and run it from there.

Copied the non-beta XYplorer.exe to empty folder, started it in trial mode, still freezes.

It must be some kind of incompatibility with another program etc.

What security software do you use? Does temporarily disabling it (preferably without being connected to the internet :P) make any difference?

I have no security software whatsoever, just a hardware firewall. I don't have any other 3rd party programs either that would constantly do something in the background. I run a single administrator user account and have UAC disabled.

Here's the list of installed software:
Steam + some old games
Microsoft Office 2010
Quicktime Alternative Lite
PerfectDisk 10
RT 7 Lite

Everything else like browsers etc. are portable.

I have removed some unneeded windows components from my Vista Home Premium install disc, like Windows Movie Maker and DVD Burner and some games, but all system components should be there.

Is this also when you click on the already pre-selected first item ("Text Files")?

Yes, anywhere in the box, I've tried clicking various different places, the checkbox, the text, the empty area. No luck.

There is one more thing I just noticed, the scroll bar of the lower box (where I can click normally) changes size just before the freeze, so something is probably added to the lower box list because of the click.

Here's some hardware info just in case:
Intel Q9450 (Penryn)
Asus P5Q Pro (P45 Chipset)
8GB DDR2 800mhz
ATI Radeon HD 3870

Could you post screenshots of the situation right before and after the click. Thanks!

Just to clarify: your first post mentioned Windows 7 x64, whereas now you mention Vista?

Two items strike me in your list of installed software:
- Quicktime Alternative Lite: can change extension/registration information. Could you try uninstalling it?
- The biggest *potential* problem is using RT 7 Lite to create a custom install disc: basically, you have a non-standard *base* install. I hope Don and/or others have more ideas, but this makes troubleshooting from a known baseline config much harder.

My mistake, I meant Windows 7 Home Premium. The word "vista" has somehow stuck into my head after all these years.

I know that it's always risky business to tamper with windows components and I'm not blaming anyone for bugs. Just wondering whether the admin might know what exactly is going on the moment I click and freeze.

IMAGES APPEAR IN REVERSE ORDER:
-FIRST IMAGE IS A LITTLE WHILE AFTER CLICK
-SECOND IMAGE INSTANTLY AFTER CLICK
-LAST IMAGE BEFORE CLICK.

Sorry about large size.

The scrollbar of the upper window is ok to click, I just noticed. Everything else in it not.

I see you unticked all Text formats which seems unusual. But still it does not generate an error on my system. :?

I've tried it with all text boxes ticked, too, that's how things were with the very first freeze, but it doesn't make a difference.

Does XYplorer use some kind of special windows components with the preview system? I've tried starting all the services that I had on manual, like desktop window manager etc. but no change. My xyplorer (and preview functions) work perfectly otherwise.

Thanks for looking into it, I will try to uninstall some programs and see if there's a change.

BTW prior versions to 9.20 with the old preview formats window worked normally. Weird problem :|
