Catalog Wishes

Hi,

I recently switched to Win7 x64 and couldn't stand Windows Explorer. I've put up with it for years, but Win7's iteration was the last straw.

I purchased XY Lifetime Pro after testing it out for 26 days! I finally found a worthy Windows Explorer replacement. Thanks, Don!!!

I really like the Catalog feature, but I'm running out of catalog space.
Can there be a catalog option to make it its own column? I can see using it quite a bit, but I like to have it visible all the time, along with the tree and right panes. Or maybe expand it across the bottom, the whole width of XY with multiple columns?

I integrated XY into the shell and made it my default file manager. I thought by doing this, all the program save-as dialogs would be XY flavored, too. They're not. Would this be possible?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi and welcome to the XY forums! And thanks for buying XY on behalf of Don!

I presume you are using Categories? I have my catalog and tree showing all the time and find using Categories helps a lot...

I don't believe so...see http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5113

In principle, it should be possible -- since 2 other apps [that I know of] feature this ability -- but just how challenging it would be to implement and how much of an overhaul it would require, that I have not got a foggiest idea ;)

It is planned to support an unlimited number of Catalogs. You will be able to switch Catalogs in a blink.

You may :) One is Explorer itself. Another -- and this is untested by myself, but works according to a forum member here -- is Directory Opus.

Explorer is the one we want to flee :)
so there is one left...
seems there is space to improve and add this to the wishlist after xy64 (bits)

I liked Fileex a lot but its left alone since years

There is much wasted space to the right of the Catalog "shortcut list", in my setup. It would be efficient to allow several columns of catalog items here.

I currently have the File Tree on the left, File Pane on the right and the Catalog below File Tree. Could a third column be added, to display the Catalog and/or the Mini Tree down to the left of the File Tree?

Admittedly your catalog looks like a lot of wasted space but that's because your captions are so short! :P

I would not bet on a 3rd column here. Especially since I will soon add a large preview panel to the right of the list...

Thanks for considering it.

What about additional columns within the Catalog window?

An old wish from jacky. But not easy to do. Does not really fit into my current schedule.

Well, keep it in the back of your mind!

I think a third column option, down the left side would be great! Especially with my 1900x1200 24" widescreen.

Your right-side preview panel will be optional, right? Make the 3rd column optional too. To each his own.

Typically, there should be a sound justification for each feature addition. Making everything optionable/configurable aka being all things to all people is seldom successful ;)
