Unwanted Delays in XYplorer

My XYplorer always has a delay in trying to enumerate directory when I open it up. Currently I'm working ver 9.00. It's certainly not the ("XYplorer is not only amazingly fast and light, it is also extremely fun") that I see in the writeups. Typically, this only happens the first time I use XYplorer in each session.

Here's what happens:
- I Open the program
- I click on a directory in the left pane
- A tab will open listing in the tab the directory I have clicked
-The listing in the right panel is incomplete and the program freezes for a while. If I click on the top title bar I shows NOT RESPONDING. If I use Task Manager and try to stop the program I get the same message.
- If I wait the program will eventually "catch up" and operate normally. But this initial delay is nerve racking.

Is there some kind of indexing going on that I can turn off? I notice that there is disk accessing going on during the delay. I have now started trying Windows explorer as a test initially and there is no delay.

I have tried the program on Windows Vista 64 and it seems the delay is longer there than on the Windows XP system.

Backup your settings and try a fresh/default XY. Does it still happen?

i had this type of delay some time ago, and it was caused by my antivirus.
it would read every file before allowing xyplorer to display them on the list.
it was particularly slow when opening a folder with many zips or rars.

try disabling your AV to see if it helps.

I get especially bad delays with directories full of executables/dlls. Especially when they are UPX compressed.

I hate Sophos...

You may be right that it is the virus scans that is delaying XYplorer. But, what I can't understand, if that is true, is why it has to affect XYplorer so much more than other apps. Tonight I tried an experiment: As soon as my computer had finished booting (and while the virus scan was still performing its jobs) I opened Windows explorer and selected my download folder. That folder contains all kinds of 2.33Gb stuff. Explorer displayed the 122 items quite handily. I then closed Explorer and opened XYplorer, selected the same download folder and had to wait and wait and wait. Is there some reason that XYplorer is not immune to virus scan system priorities while WinExplorer is? Any settings that
I can try?

My best guess is that the Windows API's that XY uses are not the same as WE uses and that possibly WE uses some routines that aren't available to XY.

Upd/Addendum: In this similar thread, it seems that "generic icons" setting may have some effect: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2102

I've disabled icon overlays in most of my settings with the latest beta and I'm still noticing a big delay in changing directories. So something is wrong and I've successfully been using XYplorer for quite some time using the betas.

Any of you get this problem with a fresh XY? (Copy XYplorer.exe to some temp folder and run it...)

I also get sometimes these delays when opening folders in the list usually the first time I enter in the folder for the active session.
I think it is due to the antivirus that inspects accessed files.

I took this suggestion, excluded XYplorer.exe in MSE and it seems everything is okay. However, this begs a question: how much virus protection have I given up? I agree that it seems not necessary to scan a complete directory EVERY time it is first opened, but since I use XYplorer for all file/folder access I now wonder whether MSE will catch a random virus.exe file that I might click on to open?

Only time will tell how much protection I have.

Here my point of view: I hope there is truth in your own words...

When you open a file, it should be checked, and maybe when you "touch" the contents - i.e. copy or move it.

But when you "open" - i.e. list - a directory, I'd see no reason to scan all contained files.
And I'd expect from a virus scanner to work like this.

Or am I wrong here?

I am aware that this is a very old thread, but still I think the following should be considered:

I am using XY now for over half a year, and always had these annoying delays. They were never much longer than a few seconds or so, so I lived with them. But today I had a really big (700 mb) EXE file on my desktop which always made XY crash when I opened the desktop (well actually XY just hangs 5 minutes but that surely feels like crashing...).

So what I want to say: Maybe it would make sense if XY would display a reminder to users running Microsoft Security Essentials, to remind them of adding XY as an exception in MSE. It's a massive improvement in the user experience and as I said, it can go unnoticed for months...

Or maybe XY could even add itself as an exception (don't know if that's possible)?

Just saying this for the sake of other users; I myself know now what to do, but who knows how many users are out there that use an unnecessarily slow XY?

How many probably use Microsoft Security Essentials? I have no idea...
