Are you using FVS? (Folder View Settings) If yes, you maybe should define a default folder view setting with Autosize Columns ON.
Apart from this, you should know that the Autosize Columns settings is not automatically spread over all tabs. It is only applied to the current tab and inherited from here if you clone the tab (Ctrl+T).
You can however force the Autosize Columns setting to applied to all tabs of the current pane by holding SHIFT when you select it.

Thanks for the reply.
Can you please offer a step by step solution to keep me from constantly having to resize them? The time spent fiddling with them nullifies the advantages over using Win explorer IMO.

I think what you're looking for is something like this:
1) open whatever tabs you need
2) click Tools->Customize List
3) hold Shift
4) Click "Autosize Columns" (while holding Shift)
If "Autosize Columns" is checked when you begin this process, turn it off (without holding Shift, if you like), then turn it back on using the above sequence...
I believe that should solve it for you!

I have the same need as the original poster.
I am looking for a straightforward way to customize spacing, position etc. of columns in one tab
and apply this so called "template" to all other locked tabs in one go.
I don't want to fiddle and perform any extra tricks as previously mentioned in this thread.
Thanks for any pointers.

I have something at the bottom of my extended roadmap that should give you hope: I plan allow you to give (optional)
labels to FVS schemes, so that you can apply such a scheme from a simple dropdown menu (with all labelled schemes) to the current list (or all tabs if you like).

This sounds good to me. It would make this task easier. I am looking forward to the implementation.
