Code: Select all

* The general default path now is MyComputer. Before it was Desktop.
Well, I liked it better before.

When first opening a file manager you should see files, not drives, or? I guess I change it back to Desktop...

Yes, default to desktop was better.

Please don't change it back to Desktop. Desktop is nothing more than a folder in Documents and Settings/Users/etc and Desktop can have no files in it, so in wanting to show a user files you may show him/her none ;). Starting in My Computer is better because it shows the top level collection of storage devices and this allows a user to click their way into the file structure as necessary.

Yes, desktop is better, that is after all the root of everything, your entry point to your computer('s files), and why in any smart file manager it would the top node of your tree. Oh wait...

I'd say stick with 'My Computer' also as it gives the widest options for where to go...

BTW, when I view Desktop in XY, all I see is "Local Settings" but in WE, I also see the following as System Folder's:
My Documents
My Computer
My Network Places
Recycle Bin
Microsoft Outlook
-plus- all my shortcuts that I see on my Desktop (which in my case, are actually stored within AllUsers).

So isn't that more limited view of what is on Desktop a bit confusing to new users?

Oh, I misunderstood something here.
I thought when no location is found it defaults to My computer, but seems like it defaults to desktop, which is fine.

...User-define-able...? Anyone? (In this case, ANY folder could also be assigned - think on the possibilities...)
As I said, I personally like the My Computer place to start as I consider XYplorer a PORTABLE file manager prior to everything else. And Desktop gives me NOTHING on that matter, except few clicks more - and few clicks more x20/30 PER DAY can be a VERY considerable nuisance...

Permanent startup path is already configurable in Configuration -> Startup & Exit. And it accepts environment variables ;)

I *ALWAYS* thought that "perm startup path" was a config applied for XY recognizing where its subfolders/parameter files should be find by the prog... (remembered that while writing, but not mentioned due to the concept I mistakenly had...)
So it "auto-recognizes where it currently is", yes...?

It's there so you can define a path that you always want to be in when you fire up XYplorer.

All file managers I've seen start at Desktop by default. But then again Desktop is the top node in every (smart) file manager apart from this one here. :) Still I think user expectation is rather "Desktop" than "top node". Hm, undecided... :|

That was a bug. Next version will default to the general default path.

Just to be clear: I agree with XY's way to use MyComputer as top-node. Clear a MiniTree as much as you can and you end up where? MyComputer! Because it's the top-node, the root of every file management you'll do. So my vote goes to keep smart and use MyComputer and not Desktop. (Of course, I never use the Desktop myself, but still.)

(As for default, here in Win7 looks like my explorer default to Library, although if I was to ever use that thing, I would call it like I did under XP, using the (My )Computer link. Wanna guess where it defaults/opens? ;) )

The Top.
That's not Desktop (for XY).
That's Arbeitsplatz
