Let me suffice with a suggestion in this thread, how a possible solution could work:
Maybe it's an idea to check the timestamp of ini and various data files when closing XYplorer, but before saving its actual state. If anything has changed since XYplorer was invoked (or last saved its state), a warning could be displayed, allowing the user to either discard or save the changes. An additional third option would be even cooler, but definitely more difficult to implement, being the possibility to merge the two states.
