I have read through and implemented the FAQ for setting xyplorer as the default file manager. I checked the registry keys and they are correct. However Vist64 will not use xyplorer as the default.

Is this an anomaly of Vista64 security? Is there any work around? I have been looking for a really good file manager for sometime now and this is definitely the best that is out there. So naturally I want to use it for everything, but I have a suspicion that Vista is stopping me.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Did the message say that values have been imported successfully into the registry? Did you reboot after applying? Are you running with administrator permissions?

Also try using "REGEDIT4" instead of "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00". Both should work, but I have a feeling using 5.00 was throwing up errors when used on Win 7 (might be wrong though )

My hidden suspicion, and this is purely speculation, is that because XYplorer is a 32-bit app 64-bit Windows cannot use it as default file manager in Shell. The only precedent to back up this theory is that for XYplorer to use 64-bit app's extension it's necessary to install its 32-bit sibling. So for my speculation the tables are somewhat reversed.

I don't have 64 bit Windows yet to test, but I found this info by MS:

The default 64-bit version of Registry Editor that is included with 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista displays the 32-bit keys under the following node:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WOW6432Node

So maybe the wrong keys have been written?

I was signed on as the administrator. After the install I did a reboot and retested but no luck. I looked in the registry and I can see the keys.

I did backup the registry before doing the key change so I could go back and redo the work. However I am a bit reluctant to mess around too much with the registry because I find Windows about as stable as a horse wearing roller blades. I can see the keys in the registry so I assumed that the priviledges must have been ok.

Are there any plans to build XYplorer against the 64bit API's? Or has anyone tried this under Vista 64? I don't know that much about Vista 64 security other than it is a royal mess most of the time and interfers with itself on a regular basis.

Conc. the thread topic: Let me know if you make progress. I will get win7/64 soon and will then try myself to make it work. It should be possible: I assume you can open a file by dbl-click with a 32-bit app, so why not open a folder by dbl-click with a 32-bit file manager?

I have made XYPlorer the default file manager on my Vista x64. The registry trick works. Ofcourse in the .reg file, I had to change "C:\\Program Files\\XYplorer\\XYplorer.exe\" to "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\XYplorer\\XYplorer.exe\". And ofcourse the key combination of Windows key + E will still open Windows Explorer, not XYPlorer.

ProcessExplorer can replace task manager. It's pretty nice feature of it as it doesn't depend on changing many keys. If you want I guess this could be useful for many users who want's to replace their FM .
