I read in the MS guide to using the new Windows Explorer in win 7 how to use it as dual pane - snap one WE instance to the left side of the display using the new areo feature and another instance to the right side - voilla dual pane ??? - they also have a tabbed version as an add-on but I still prefer XY tabs and goodies.

Not only it's Dual Pane, but also dual tree. However, this means that two instances of XYplorer can create dual tree and Quad Pane   That is if you have a monitor big enough to accommodate such an arrangement ;)

Still I don't understand.

Just sounds like dual instance to me - that doesn't seem new? Is there a difference?

It is a dual instance, but with a twist. Windows 7 has a new feature called Snap (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... tures/snap) whereby windows are snapped to left and right edges of the screen. Firing up 2 instances of Explorer and snapping one to the right and another to the left can create an impression of Dual Tree/Pane.
