Better Tree in-line rename

This behaviour has been annoying me for long enough and the time has come to speak my mind. And by annoying I mean
The width of my tree pane is what I'd call average for a 19" screen. One nuance is that I have some long-named folders nested deeply in the directory structure. Therefore, as I keep expanding nodes to get to them the amount of space, width-wise, in the tree pane shrinks. I find the folder that I want, it has a long name, so the remainder is outside of the visible area. I go into rename mode and what happens is that XYplorer shunts my view of the tree pane all the way to the right so the edge of the folder I'm trying to rename is against the Tree-List separator. Even if all I wanted to do is rename the first couple of letters at the beginning of this folder's name on the other end of the Tree pane. This behaviour is so unintuitive I don't know where to begin
WE on XP behaves the same...BUT Explorer on Win 7 is much better - it allows you to seek through the name similar to when you mouse-cursor select a line of text. Perhaps other Win 7 users can explain it better if I failed in doing so.
In general, seeking through a name in the tree with a mouse is more difficult than with a keyboard and more difficult than it should be, especially when the name of a folder is longer than width of tree pane. One has to exit the rename mode, drag the progress bar to the left, go into rename mode, get shunted to the right, exit rename mode...it's a vicious circle!
Would it PLEASE be possible to improve this behaviour? Won't be so much of an issue if I had a big monitor, because I'd have more screen real estate, but as it stands it's making me loose my hair one by one and I haven't even hit mid-life crisis
