Favourite directories listing

Hi, I'm using Windows 7 (w7) and just had to find a Windows Explorer (WE) replacement. My major dislike for w7's WE was its lack of "Simple Folder View" for the Navigation Pane. This is simply the connected lines between parent and child folders that you see in the nav. pane. Makes navigation a pain. However XY has this feature - yay :D

Well anyways, onto my question. W7 WE does have a useful feature, namely Favourites. You can drag folders to it, and access folders fast. Its location in the Navigation Pane is also useful. I know that XY has a hotlist accessed via the menu. Is there any way to get some sort of "Favourites" placed in the navigation Pane, similar to w7 WE?

Many thanks.
V

Hi and Welcome,
Yes, XY has something called catalog (apart from favorites in the menu). Catalog sits below the navigation pane or tree (you can also have it above the tree). Use key F8 to show or hide the catalog. Have fun.

Thanks for that. Categories is an even better feature than WE's favourites feature!

Only other issue seems to be the somewhat slow start up of XYplorer. Other than that - its fantastic :)

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!

Take a look at this other thread for some links about startup:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4094

(The new FAQ sub-page doesn't seem to be linked on site yet)

I'd also suggest you see http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4089 re W7 Favorites and such.

Thanks for the link to speed up XY. I went through the various options that were recommended to be disabled, but they are all disabled by default :) Oh well, it really only takes about 3 or so seconds to initiate. I do have a legacy platform i.e. 2.0 GHz athlon on a 5+ year old Abit NF7-S mobo with 1.5 GB Ram which might be the cause of it.

XY is a keeper! It's really that good that its now going to be my replacement for Windows 7's win explorer. Better than all the win explorer products i've looked at e.g. directory opus, xplorer2 etc.

Thanks for your help everyone!

V

Mine is typically less than that...You can see the exact time on the bottom of "Startup & Exit" section in Config...for some unexplainable reason, restarts of XY seem to take a bit less time than the first time in a given boot session...but the simple way I avoid even this delay is to keep XY running constantly except when I have to close it to install a new beta vers! And as I use it that much, I couldn't do without XY being active anyway!

That's more modern than mine! I have a 1GHz Pentium III Mobile on a 7 yr old Dell with 512MB...but then again, I'm running a matching old OS: W2K!

8) Very glad to hear that! We think it's better than the others as well, and a critical part of that is the community here in this forum! Don't be a stranger, so please visit daily, ok?

Nice - thanks for that! I just did some timings on 8 restarts (no reboots) and i think I overestimated. In seconds:

2.183, 1.804, 1.785, 1.667, 1.540, 1.447, 1.891, 1.663

So it's not toooo bad :)

LOL and here I am complaining about my system. Still on W2K hey :o That is one nice OS! It was actually the only OS i enjoyed migrating towards. I went from Win95 -> Win2K -> XP -> Win7. So I missed out on Win98 and Vista completely. W2K is just so clean. No fuss. Sleek. Was a pain to move to XP, as is the move to W7. I might move back to XP. W7 seems slower, glitchy and painful at times.

Yep I've noticed that people are very helpful and friendly here; more so than other forums, nntp threads etc i've accessed. Will do :D And thanks again!
