huge thumbs cache

my thumbs folder tends to get very big, very fast (usually 900+mb in 2~3 weeks), but cleaning the cache defeats the whole purpose of using it.
disabling the cache is also not an option since i work with lots of videos, and shell generated thumbs are slow and crash very often with rmvb (which, btw, are more than half of my video files).
OTOH, xy thumbs generation for pictures is really fast, making the cache a waste of space.
so, here's the wish:
i'd like to have an option/tweak to only use the cahe for non-picture files.
