Hi,

I am trying TrackerV3 and when I was using it on my home computer I get following error:
Run-time error '5':
Invalid procedure call or argument

The error occur when I am clicking on following directories:
Program Files
Windows
Document and Settings

It does not matter if I am clicking in the treeview or in the listview. If I am clicking on the + sign then it works okay and
I can access the files and directories in, for example Program Files.
When I click on - I get the error.

Have tried on one other computer and there I do not get the error.

My computer at home has Win XP SP2 Pro Eng. and the regional settings are Swedish.
The computer Tracker works on, have Win XP SP1 Swe.

Any clue why I get the error?

Not the slightest clue.
It happens just on these 3 directories?? What could be the reason for this? Total mystery...

I have find more directories that gives the same error.
For example:
Common Files in Program Files.
Microsoft Shared in Common Files

Found also other directories that not have with Win XP todo. First it looks it
was only directories that XP had created, but there are other directories also that gives the error.

I have test to copy a directory that gives the error to another place, then it works without any problems. Very strange!!

When I get more time I will try to duplicate the problem in a test case that occurs on more than one computer. I will send it to you.

It seems the directories are the ones that are "special folders"

Does it happen with your "send to" folder and your startup folder as well?
send to can be found as a subfolder of your profile
(if your username is lole it would be "C:\Documents and Settings\lole\SendTo\", it is a hidden folder by default)

the startup folder is the subfolder from the startmenu, should be here: "C:\Documents and Settings\lole\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\", it's not hidden by default

there are only a few folders more that are possible, but it seems it is somehow connected to them...

btw here is the location where you can see a list of all these special folders in the registry (I don't know which of those 2 is the more dominant one or in what cases they are used differently):

I also have thought that the problem was beacuse the folders are "special folders".
But I have one folder in Program Files called HighMAT CD Writing Wizard, that
also give me the error, this folder is not a "special folder". When I coping the HighMAT
folder to another folder and click on HighMAT, no error.

Tried your idea to access SendTo and Startup, no error.
But when I clicked on one of the user name, example Administrator I get the error.

Should also mention that I have no problem when I am using PowerDesk.

This is a strange problem.

Have you tried changing the regional settings on the computer that has problems? It is possible that Win XP SP2 Pro has something different about the regional settings. I had problems before with some programs when I had Hebrew settings (right-to-left) installed on my system (XP English, but not SP2). Just another idea.

can you describe as exactly as possible, when the error comes up: mouse down or mouse up on a tree node? are any files of that folder already being listed?

I noted that all of your examples, apart from "Windows", have blanks in their names. Could that be a pattern?

Hi,

First to you Gandolf.
Tried to change the Regional to English, still the error.
I have tried Tracker on other computers with Swedisg regional
settings and on that computer, no error.

To you Don,

I am starting up the Tracker with the C drive selected and expanded (I see all the folders, top-level).
Now I using up and down keys on the keyboard to navigate.
Going down in the tree (I am in the tree-view) and when I am coming to Documents and Settings or Program Files I get the error. The error shows up direct when Document and Settings gets selected. The tab have changed the name to Documents and Settings but the folders and the files in the list-view, are for the folder before Documents and Settings in my tree (Data in my case).

If I am clicking on one the folders that gives the error and hold the mouse button down no error, but as soon I realese the bmouse button the error comes up. The tab have changed the name to right folder but do not show any files and folders.

The strange in all of this is I can click on the plus sign before a folder that gives the error (Program Files=PF) and then click on one of the folders under PF. Then the list-view, list all the files and folders in that selected folder.
I tested to select a folder, AutoCAD 2004, no error. See here, space in the folder name and no problem. I have also found folder(s) that gives the error and did not have any space in the name.

What I have found out now is that the error comes up after Tracker set the folder name in the tab, but before Tracker update the list-view.

Do you need any more information?
I understand this is very hard for you (Don) to fix, think it is something wrong with my computer at home, but what?

Thanks for your infos! It's really hard to see from the distance what's behind this, but it's also thrilling.

From all you told me so far, I have to conclude that the problem is caused by something inside those folders: some "evil" file that causes a crash. But what could that be, I have no idea. Do you?
When you said you copied folders to another place and the error disappeared, was that copying with contents?

If there is something wrong with your computer, it would be really nice to find out what. I suppose other file managers do work without problem, so if there's something wrong then only TrackerV3 perceives it... as well interesting.

I think I have found the problem.

On the folders I have problem with have the created date set to: 1794-07-21 22:26. Found also folders with last modified date 28977-01-30 05:25.

Do you know ant way to change them from the command line. If I am runing Win XP the normal way, lot of the folders with strange dates are locked by the system, so I need a way to change them before anything else is loaded.
Hope there is a tool that can do the change without I need to do reinstall of my computer.

I had virus in my computer (now gone) this winter, probably that gave me this problems.

Hi lole,

This is getting fascinating. More ideas:
1. Do the folders that cause problems all have "ini" files in them? They may have something odd about them. The "ini" files may be modified by Windows if you copy the folder to another location, so the error might disappear at the other location.
2. Could the time-stamp of one of the sub-folders or files be strange? What happens if you show only the name column? If that does not show the error then try adding other columns until the error appears.

Just read your later post. Can you not change the time-stamp in TrackerV3 or will it not allow that?
