Technically no problem, but is it good? Ctrl+Space is by default used to select/unselect the focused list item. This would not work anymore if you reassign it...

i cant speak for everybody but for me it is useful for switching to another application to view/edit a file quickly. for the select/unselect function, im used to using the mouse for it.

is it in the customize keyboard shortcut? i was searching for it there but i cant find it.

thanks

It might be standard but it's an almost unusable method of selection.

A better method for keyboard use is sticky (or persistent) selection. For those who don't know it - a key (spacebar) selects / de-selects the file and another key (Ins) selects / de-selects and steps onto the next file. Far superior to the Shift + Spacebar method, where it's easy to loose all the selection you've just made. it's also a single key which is quicker than multiple key selection.

Several file managers use a variation of it, perhaps a suggestion for XY??

You can this now (but using more than one key at a time):
Ctrl+Up/Down -> step to previous/next file
Ctrl+Space -> toggle selection
Space -> select

But it's not "sticky", i.e. as soon as I let go of the control key and move the selection I loose it all, or is there a setting I've missed?

True. So all you would need for sticky selection is to make Up/Down function as Ctrl+Up/Down does now. XY shall hold the Ctrl button for you. That would be easy. I put it on the wish list...
