when drag and drop files into an existing zip file (updating without open the file in zip program), I get the error "shelldrop failed (IDrpTrgt is nothing), it happens with both izarc and 7zip. any help?

I tried with dropping on *.7z files and got the same error.
Trying with Explorer, *.7z was not even droppable at all. So it is not registered as a drop target. You should enable Shell integration somewhere in the software's (7z's) settings.

7z format with solid volume is not dropable anyway. my problem is with zip archive files, where I'm able to do drop in explorer and directory opus, xyp keeps giving this error. and yes, I do have shell integration checked, I miss this handy way of adding files to an existing zip without hassle.

Oh, this should work of course, and it does work here (WinZip).

Have not heard any complaints since long.
Anybody got it working using izarc or 7zip?

I played around a bit and here is what's happening, xyp won't support drag and drop if zip file is associated with 3rd party programs like 7z/izarc. the workaround is revert zip to windows native association and use portable file assoc in xyp to open in preferred program. still I would want xyp to do the drop regardless the system file assoc though.

That doesn't seem to be the case here, where I have zip files associated with WinRAR (on XP SP3) and drop to add works fine.

not sure about winrar, but 7zip/izarc are no go. I remember someone else reported same issue awhile back but no solution was found.
