Columns for Mediainformation (ID3, and more)

While having a lot of music, it would be very useful to have the ID3-information like author, song-title and so on as columns in the filelist.
Combinding selected columns with FolderView would be a really great extention in useability.
I've searched a bit on the forms but the only applicable thread is
http://xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php? ... &hilit=mp3 but there wasn't any reaction to it.

This is an interesting one to ponder because it is possible to add such columns in Windows Explorer. However, media information is available through Info Panel's Preview tab. I think if columns are added for audio files then, in a way, it will be slightly discriminatory to other types of files (video, image etc), so it's a can of worms that I don't think Don will be opening.
Also, XYplorer has special capabilities as far as naming MP3 files is concerned so you can rename the files to contain several important bit of information of an audio track. More information is here:

What I ment to say was only to present the meta-information (that is read anyway, and displayed in file-info-tip / info-pane) as columns, which would enable you to sort the filelist by them.
Of course this goes for video/image/...-files as well.
So this shouldn't be implemented as special-extra-columns but as another way of representing the meta-information that is already there anyway.

Such columns are not planned currently. It's true that the information is already retrieved in File Info Tips, but this is a very slow process! It would heavily slow down browsing.
The good news: I have plans for an
user-customizable "info" (or so) column where you can define on a per-file-type basis (pattern match) what is shown for each item... but that's for later...

Sounds also quite nice.
Can you give it a rank on the roadmap, or is it just some kind of vague idea till now?

It's been about a year and I'm bringing this back up because I just now realized that, when viewing my Downloads folder in WE, I could add some additional col's that would apply ideally there such as Module Desc & Vers, Company Name, Product Name & Vers...so obviously I might wish to do same in XY...I see the "Shell Columns" is at top of list of the 'undone' part of Roadmap so any updates on where it may really fall in the to-do timeframe?
And given that by WE's vers of FVS, these extra cols only apply to my Downloads folder in WE where I asked for them, I don't have any overhead on other folders...but I presently don't use FVS in XY.

Did not realise that! Just tried it out, and that's extremely useful. That'll shave minutes off a ton of organisation I'm constantly doing.

Oh, and I do realize that I can view the above fields on these EXE files via hover/tooltip but having it in col fmt can, on occasion, make it more convenient to use.

May I ask how come you did not realise that? Purely out of curiosity...you didn't know it was there? a challenge to find? not expecting to be a feature?

Simply didn't know it was there - I've used the media preview before, but never thought to try and edit the info there. I see now the cursor changes when hovering over the editable data, but with the grey on grey (no discernable input box), it never occurred to me. It's not something I'd looked for and struggled to find before, and I suppose if I HAD been looking, I'd have realised quite quickly.

Thank you for your response. It confirms a GUI "rule" that I read about not too long ago: users must be able to determine clickability by visual inspection alone

Wondering if that could be done thru scripting.
Read info from files - enable Comment column and write to it (temporarily) - Show an info panel (HTML) - button to convert info into a .txt report - close: close HTML and reset Comments field to blank/disabled or leaving info there as per user choice.
Had this idea after testing DriveManager script.
PeterH, serendipity, jacky - any one available...?
I bet the same would help Hallgren on his task, as it seems to be an ongoing one.
