Everytime I select a word doc XYPlorer immediately opens it

Ever since I switched from Windows XP to Vista and Office 2007, XYplorer immediately tries to open any Word or Excel file the instant that I select it. Before it asked me if I want to open the file, but I accidentally turned that toggle off to always ask and now it immediately opens the file whenever I select it in XYplorer.
How do I stop it from trying to open the file? I prefer to be able to select the file without it wanting to open it.

This sounds like the FAQ item
When previewing an office document it is opened in a new window and not previewed within XY. Have you tried the suggestion there? If so, what effect did it have?
Thanks!

I had seen that post, but to be honest I was unable to follow it because it appears to be written for Windows XP. In Windows Vista there is no File Types tab within the folder options dialog. In Vista you have to go to "Control Panel>Programs>Make a file type always open in a specific program," but when you are in that dialog you can only browse to a program you want to open for a given file extension. I don't see any other special toggle settings like "browse in same window."
Maybe I am just missing it. Does anyone know how to do it in Vista?

I asked this question on Leo Laporte's IRC chat just now...3 Vista users tried to help me but none knew where/if that "Open in new window" checkbox exists in Vista as mentioned in the XY wiki for XP...so I'm at a loss to help further...sorry!
They mentioned "Start>Default Pgms>Associate" and this article
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-500
Maybe another Vista user will stop by here and give the answer?

I did a little searching on this last night and it appears that MS did away with the equivalent of a "Browse in same window" setting. I found many instances of people looking for the same thing and most of the suggestions came in the form of a registry change, unfortunately. Here on my work computer I have Vista Business (32-bit) and Office 2k7. Previously I had the previewing of Office documents disabled in XY, but for the purposes of this post I enabled it and when I went to preview a Word doc it opened in Word instead of previewing in XY. I did the opposite of what was suggested in the Answer below (because the person posing the question wanted the opposite of what you're after) and now XY previews the document. What I did was delete the
BrowserFlags key.
I think that's what you're after, correct? I don't know what previous versions of Word looked like when previewed in XY, but with 2k7 you get the whole Ribbon and everything so unless your preview pane height takes up half of your real estate you're not going to be able to see much. Hopefully the links below work for you!

JustinF, thanks for that research!
However, now on re-reading the original post, I'm beginning to wonder if somehow SAW is getting what I knew in Win Expl as the "Select on single click" but I don't recall that XY has any setting like that...or does it? If so, where?

Yeah, I was a little unsure of SAW's question, too. I'm pretty sure XY does NOT have a "single-click to launch" setting. I had suggested that to Don long ago and if he implemented it then I missed it when it came out. Back in the day when I used WE I had that feature enabled it and loved it!
EDIT:
Yeah, I just went back and re-read SAW's post....I think I gave him an answer to a question he didn't ask.

You weren't the only one!
Anyway, you may likely have provided the info needed to update the wiki for Vista on this topic, so it may be useful in any case!

Thanks Justin, I was searching that answer myself, not sure what the side effects are of deleting the registry key "browserflags". But like JC said this can go into Wiki.

Thus searching using the value "browserflags", I found the following also:
Regarding IE7 and Office 2007:
http://www.scribe.com/help/index.html?m ... _setup.htm
which includes a link to the M$ doc
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927009
And here's another one that gives a bit more info on flags as related to Excel:
http://www.mindspill.org/998
There are numerous other variants of this info, so just Google for "browserflags" to locate them.

Let me just try to clarify my issue again to make sure we are all on the same page. My issue is more like the single click problem that was described. I would single click on a document with the intention of just highlighting it, but instead I would get prompted with this dialog asking me if I wanted to open the file. Then I turned off the toggle to keep prompting me with this message and now whenever I single click on a doc it immediately opens it in Word.
What's worse is that XYPlorer remembers the last document I had highlighted and so if I exit XYPlorer with a doc still highlighted, it will immediately open that doc when I restart XYplorer without any warning.
At this point I would be happy to return to my original problem of always getting prompted with that dialog. I don't know how to reset that prompt in Vista.

Have you tried the registry maneuvers suggested to see what effect it has? (although I'm not too confident that it'll solve your problem, but you never know)
The single click behavior you describe sounds like Windows Explorer's "Single-click to open an item (point to select)" option, but I don't recall XY having a similar feature. Is your Info Panel open to the Preview pane, causing the opening of the document(s)?

Thanks JustinF, my info panel was open and set to the preview tab and I hadn't even realized it. Now that I switched to another tab I no longer have the issue. I'm glad it was an easy fix.

I guess it was the fact that you had joined us here in forum some months ago vs at time of your post that made me not even think of that possibility! Had you been a brand new user, it would be more typical...guess anything is possible...just curious how one doesn't notice preview tab is active though...maybe you don't use it that often?

If you DO like having the Preview tab open all the time, you can go into Tools|Configuration|Previewed Formats and uncheck any file types you DON'T want previewed (i.e. .doc, .xls, etc.). I have mine set up so no Office documents are previewed pretty much for the same reason that you were complaining about.
