Strange issue on Vista, no computer, desktop availabe
Hi,
I recently upgraded to Vista, and as usual I moved some of the user subfolders to a different drive. So in case of a disk/OS failure I have some of my data available to me. I necer liked the Windows way of user folders anyway..
So on the D:\ drive I have a Documents folder with some subfolders, and the subfolders in the Vista "rob" userfolder point to their corresponding folders on D:\Documents.
Like in XP, but Vista'd..... ;-)
I DL'd XYplorer again to test it on Vista, but to my surprise the computer an desktop links are "currently not available" . Opening the properties it will revert to the control panel>system folder of Vista, so I cannot set folder paths.
There's also a white icon beneath the computer icon that doesn't do anything either. It seems it want to display the desktop...
Also changing the preferences in XYplorer don't change anything. I manually reset all links to the C:\Users\Rob\Desktop variable, but in XYplorer it still isn't there.
I -can- browse to the folder in XYplorer and see the stuff that's on the desktop.....
It looks like XYPlorer looks at hardcoded paths for this, or there's something wrong with the "linking" between Vista and XYplorer. It all works in Windows Explorer, so Vista did understand my shuffling of folders and links.
Anyone on this as I'm stumped atm.

No, those paths are not hard-coded in XY. What you experienced is probably related to a bug that has been fixed in v7.90.0006.
Could you please download the latest BETA and try again.

Ok, thanks for trying! I guess I have to make another maintenance release soon...Rork wrote:Hi,

PS: To be fair to Vista, I should add that this issue had nothing to do with the OS. It was an OS-insensitive bug.

I'm having this problem with 7.90.0050 on Vista x64, so I think it's cropped back up.

I dont use x64 so I cannot check that for you, but could you update to latest beta v7.90.0066 to make sure it still exists?

Yes, I've done that, and today I install 7.90.0087, and it's still there.
Thanks for looking at this

Re: Strange issue on Vista, no computer, desktop availabe
I am getting this on 7.90.0120
I have two computers that I work with and I get this only on one. My Documents = d:\My documents. It worked and then I needed to temporarily delete my D: partition. After restoring it XYPlorer stopped displaying the desktop folder and the My Documents folder. Where My Documents should be displayed it displays three sub directories which appear to the the directories under the XYPlorer directory. Both computer are setup identically.
%desktopreal% displays the real desktop.

Just to be clear, you mean when you click desktop from the tree nothing shows up and clicking on documents shows the subdirectories from XY?
What does typing %desktop% and %personal% in the address bar show?

Re: Strange issue on Vista, no computer, desktop availabe
I have a bit more information. The computer that doesn't work is Vista SP1 (32 bit). On the computer that XY works on I am running either Vista with updates but not SP1, or Windows 7.serendipity wrote:Hi and Welcome to XY,MountainMan10 wrote:I am getting this on 7.90.0120

%desktop% displays a message box "couldn't find location.
%personal% shows my documents correctly
When I click on Desktop I get "Currently not available"
When I click on My Documents I get "Currently not available", but if I click the + to expand my documents I see the subdirectories form XY, but I cannot select them.

Re: Strange issue on Vista, no computer, desktop availabe
Hmm tricky, I too have Vista SP1 (32 bit) PC and have never experienced such problem. I am not sure how to help but to be sure can you install a fresh xyplorer on another folder or maybe USB stick and report again? I just want to make sure it has nothing to do with your current settings so that we can call it a bug for sure and alert admin.MountainMan10 wrote:I have a bit more information. Re: Strange issue on Vista, no computer, desktop availabe
If I move My Documents back to the default location then everything is OK. But then when I move them back again to my D: drive the problem comes back. It is very strange.

Re: Strange issue on Vista, no computer, desktop availabe
Well, now i get it. If I understand correctly, my documents is a special folder and should normally reside in root drive (where windows is installed). If you move it to your preferred location then there is no way for XY to know where you have moved it. So its not XY's fault in this case.MountainMan10 wrote:If I move My Documents back to the default location then everything is OK. Re: Strange issue on Vista, no computer, desktop availabe
Not entirely true, there are system variables (like %desktop% etc.) that tell programs where these folders reside, precisely so that they don't have to be in the same specific locations on every computer, and also because different version of Windows put these folders in different default locations.serendipity wrote: So its not XY's fault in this case.
