How To Select Different Groups of Files?

I need help with what I am sure is a very simple matter for all of you. Unfortunately, I can't quite figure it out. I'm using Ver. 7.80 and Windows XP.

How do you go about selecting seperate blocks of files at the same time? I would like to use my mouse to select, say, 10 files and then skip a few and select 5 more.

I have tried holding down the control button or the shift button or a combination of the two and trying to highlight the files. When I do this, the first block of files I had selected become unselected.

Hi and Welcome to XY,
There have been previous requests like this. If you are using anything other than the 2 detail views (menu "View | Current tab | views") then this will not work. Try switching to one of the detail views and you will get those selections. I know this is a shortcoming on XY part and I too think that this multiple selection problem needs to be fixed.

I very rarely use one of the detail views and had not thought of trying it this way. At least, if it is an absolute must, I will know how to do it. Thank you, Serendipity, for the help and for welcoming me to the board.

I know you're talking about using the selection rectangle, but you can also do the following:
Make the first selection (if you need to span multiple columns do it with this one).
Ctrl+Click the first item in the next group.
Ctrl+Shift+Click the last item in the next group.

If you're like me, you'll still miss the rectangle from WE/etc. but perhaps not quite as much.

Wow, interesting!! Did you figure this out yourself or is it a common thing in non-WE file managers?

To be honest I've always thought it was standard behavior for list controls. Though I thought the same of the selection rectangle so I'm still surprised that it's not something Don could easily enable.

Same here, I too wonder why selection with rectangle is so hard to enable for other views. But your solution above saves some frustration for users, but I guess this method is not well documented.

Yahoo! ... thanks Don, you've made me a happier man. I'm now one step closer to making XYplorer my default File Manager.

How many steps are missing? :)

hmmm, not sure I'm doing the right thing by answering ... I feel I'm hijacking this thread, but outta courtesy I'll answer. :p
A few more steps but I'm not even sure they're on your roadmap. I really need/want side by side (Dual Pane) comparison/synchronising, a Drive Bar as opposed to a drop down combo, configurable layouts (none of the current 4 suit me at all) and the abilty to drag and drop any toolbar to a position I want, either vertical or horizontal.
My current File Manager is an old and obsolete one called 2xExplorer (discontinued and superceded by one I won't mention). It doesn't even come close to being as feature rich and as powerful as XYplorer, but the fact is, it gets the job done very nicely and does/has all the things I mentioned above.

But .. I'm a patient man and can wait and hope. :p

Okay, I understand. You are coming from another software, got used to the way it works, and want to stick to the habit. We are probably all like that. However, for me as the maker this point of view can only have a low priority, since many users come from different habits. An attempt to make them all happy would end up in making them all unhappy I fear. So I try to make a file manager that first of all makes sense it itself.

Anyway, I will probably add Dual Pane soon.

Dual Pane is on the Roadmap as Don just indicated! However, I believe that comp/sync may be a somewhat separate item on the list
a Drive Bar as opposed to a drop down combo
Can you explain this better? Maybe a screenshot if applicable?
configurable layouts (none of the current 4 suit me at all)
What layout combination would you use most often if it were available? Given that some may not be possible...
the abilty to drag and drop any toolbar to a position I want, either vertical or horizontal.
I don't think this will happen, but that's just my opinion.

I believe that even if Don may not implement some of these, it's good to know exactly what a user has requested so that we can relate them to possible prior requests for same item but using different terminology.

Thank you, TheQwerty. You figured out what I failed to figure out. I had tried all different types of combinations of key clicks and couldn't find one that worked in List View.

Thanks. I understand that Don is going to solve the problem for us in another manner also, which is great.

I have solved it already.
