Filtering

First of all-great thanx for such amazing software
Amazing is the best word which describes my feelings
Now I can forget about all bloated managers.
Thanx for your well done tool.

Now a question or a suggestion maybe

When I open certain folder I'd like to filter showing results
Let's say, I wanna see only "*.txt" and "*.htm" files - the rest should be invisible
Sure, I can use a "Find Files" option to browse one folder.
But if I go to the next folder and next and next etc. I gotta push "Find Files" everytime I want to filter shown results

So maybe it is possible to set a filter for showing files?

And again-thanx for your great product.

It sure would be possible, but wouldn't this make TV3 a bit bloated?
I really don't miss this feature that much...

I would also find it useful.

Another view feature I like is to select files matching a given filter. I don't know if you could incorporate both of them in the Info panel (it could use the same filter parameters as the "Find Files" tab).

It's often useful to see all the files listed, but with certain files highlighted by a filter. If I use the find files option there could be a file of a similar name that I do not see because of the filter I've chosen.

Surely making the program larger doesn't matter, unless it's going to slow it down. If you're concerned about menus getting too long then you can go down the line of custom menus - that just makes more work for you!

I think this is would be a nice feature to have.

Another twist on this (a feature in a file manager I tried before I ran across the great TV3!) is the ability for the user to choose a font color for files that meet certain criteria. For example, I could set up a "filter" for *.jpg and all jpeg files' font color is, say, blue. I set up another "filter" for *.doc and all my documents are red. This makes it easy to find files of certain types in a sea of files, without totally hiding the other files. I know this would slow down listing a directory by a few milliseconds, but those of us who would use the feature would just have to put up with it. Just a thought.

- set a filter for showing files
- select files matching a given filter
- choose a font color for file types

I heard it and put it on my list.

But right now, as you will have already noted, I concentrate on making ver 4.00 as fast, robust and bug-free as possible. Only then, we can head on toward 4.10.

What outstanding bugs or speed improvements are left for v4.00? Aside from the zip file issue, TV3 seems pretty darn good to me. :D

None that I knew off, but the users are the ones who usually spot the bugs. And, new features (incl. bug fixes!), if they are not very tiny, almost certainly lead to new bugs. Building a bug-free software of a certain complexity is practically impossible, but it's fun to come close to it. And for a file manager it is certainly a good idea. :)

The second item has been implemented and is very handy. I'm curious, are the other 2 items anywhere close to the top of your to-do list? For me these would be two very welcome additions, especially the ability to choose a font color for files based on their type.

Low, very low... I don't find these ideas so fascinating.

Hmmmm.... :?
Being able to differentiate files by changing their font color is along the same lines as selecting files that match a filter...and you implemented that. They both allow you to easily find the files you're looking for. If I have a folder with 1000 files in it, it seems like such a great feature to be able to easily see the 4 Excel files I have in there, or the 5 files that begin with "MyPic_*".

Ok, 'nuff said.

Well, as I previously said before (in another thread) I am with JustinF on this one. I think both a filter for showing files & color filters would be great addition to TV3!

The first one would make things a lot easier & faster when you have plenty of files in a folder but need to work with only some of them (like only *.php, or all but *.dll); and the second would indeed be a pretty cool feature to "identify" some files (especially if, like me, you do not have the Type column) (pictures, videos, source, archives, etc)

(a) this sounds very theoretical to me; in real life I usually want to see all the files even if I work only with some of them. I identify my files by sorting without a problem. I would rather have a problem to identify files when they are hidden by a filter or when the list looks like a psychedelic underground movie

(b) where would this filter be attached? per-tab? per-folder? per-session?

You don't need to answer (b) if you don't have a very good reply to (a)

Ok let's remember there are 2 filters here. About the first one, sure it would not be a permanent thing, of course. I too wanna see all my files, system or not, hidden or not. But at times, when you're doing something, it would be great to set a filter to only show *.dll or such. And once done, just set it back to * (no filter)
As I see it, this would not be something "permanent" but a plus to help you work. In a way, like a search can be. You wanna get a list of files according to some criteria, not for ever, but for that time cause this is what you need to be working on at that time. 8)
BTW this is kinda off-topic but right-now the sort menu can only be poped-up through the Line# column. Couldn't it be added as a submenu on the others too? Cause it's a nice shortcut but I don't use the line column

About the color filter, yeah it can turn into a "psychedelic underground movie" if you abuse it, just like the boxed branched could. ;) But like Explorer can show "compressed files" (or something like that) on blue, it could be set up to make some files be easilly noticable.
admin wrote:(b) where would this filter be attached? per-tab? per-folder? per-session?
Well, the first filter should be a per-tab one; while the color filter should be a global thing, you set a filter to show some files in blue, you want them blue all the time, whatever tab you're in/folder they're in.

Already answered, hope my answered to (a) was okay ;)

You don't use the line column? How can I take you serious??

The show-filter: there must be some place that shows the current show-filter... I don't see the space for it. (I'm just curious... don't infer that I'm into it yet)
