Proper upgrade path from 32 to 64 bit

Post by RalphM »

For those of us who would be ready to switch to the 64-bit version (I think I'm ready now), what would be the proper way to upgrade
from the installer version (32bit) to the installer version (64-bit)?
So far I've only seen "copy this that and the other" and then "replace some files".

I'm sure other users would also appreciate a proper upgrade path for either portable and installed versions of XY.
Ralph :)

That's right and a good idea. I'll think about the best way to implement it.

In the meantime simply install the 64-bit beta (using XYplorer64_27.90_Install.exe) and run it. It will use your 32-bit configuration (if that installation used all the defaults).

If your 32-bit version is portable, simply overwrite what's there in the app path with the contents of the 64-bit portable package ("no-install package").

Check out v27.10.0009, it has an upgrade path to 64-bit via scripting. A menu command will follow once the TB version is out of beta.

Thanks for the scripting way you added.
However, the part...

...worries me a bit as I have certainly changed many things over the past 20+ years.
Would it still be advisable to use different data paths for the 32 and 64 bit versions?
I assume both upgrade versions just inherit the appdata path from the 32 bit version, right?

That was misleading, I should have said: It will use your 32-bit configuration if that installation uses the default data folder (%appdata%\XYplorer).

I see no reason to use different data paths for the 32 and 64 bit versions. It's the same app, just the bitness changes. Ideally you shouldn't notice a difference.

If you want a different data path simply change Startup.ini, e.g.:

Code: Select all

[Appdata]
Path=%appdata%\XYplorer64

Hi to all,
sorry for the "silly" question but I am little confused about upgrading from 32to 64bit app

I am using a portable installation on a specific folder, for example C:\XYplorer
I have integrate XYplorer to windows shell, so everytime I need to see-search-open a file the XYplorer.exe file is launched and I can do my work,
But since that, eventhough I am on latest ver 27.10.0400, in the "about" menu I see the 32bit app ....
On the Tools-Shell Integration menu, I got these options (config them several months - years ago ...)

I found in some posts that I need to "run an update script on my XYplorer" , can someone give me more info about how to do that ? I have no idea ... ! :(

Many thanks to all,
Panos
