Most of the time I want to use a specific view for certain filetypes (e.g 'Thumbnail' view for photos/jpgs) but occasionally I want to temporarily switch to 'Details' view so that I can see more specific info on a file (e.g. the Date Taken column).

I've setup a default view for 'Details' that I like with just a few minimal columns and saved it via View>Folder View Settings>Define this Folder View as Default. But when I go to some of my thumbnail folders and switch the view to Details, it shows loads of extra columns (e.g. Attr, Label, Tags, Exposure Time, Extra 6 etc.) and not the minimal layout I defined as default.

It seems I have to first go to View>Folder View Settings>Apply Default Folder View before it will apply my minimal details view.

Is what I'm trying to do possible, i.e. create a custom minimal default Details view that I can quickly switch to for any folder?

And in your "Manage Folder Views..." there is no view that applies to the current folder that you just switched from thumbnails to details view?

For example, I have a folder where I keep all my family photos (and this has lots of subfolders):

E:\Graphics\Photos\

and I've set this folder to be viewed as Thumbnails (including subfolders). So yes, that top level folder is listed under Manage Folder Views.

When I go to any folder within that one, they all display as Thumbnails (which is correct and what I expect). But if I then change the view of that folder (or any subfolder) to 'Details View' it switches to a Details View with every column available showing. I thought that as I've already defined the default view to only show a handful of columns, that would be what is shown when I switch to Details View.

If (while I have the Details View with all columns showing) I go to View>Folder View Settings>Apply Default Folder View then it does show the Details View with just minimal columns that I've defined as default. So at the moment I have to:

1) Change the view from Thumbnails to Details View (which shows all the extra columns that I don't need)
2) Go to View>Folder View Settings>Apply Default Folder View

I thought that as I've already defined a default view (with minimal columns) that simply switching from Thumbnails to Details would show that minimal default view?

That default folder view is for folders that don't have an already saved folder view

Just switch the thumbnail view to details view, remove all unnecessary columns, switch to thumbnail view again, save the view?

Thanks, I'm not sure what happened but I kept on playing around clearing all entries under 'Manage Folder Views' and re-saving them again and eventually it seems to have stuck correctly and works how I expected
